"Councils in England are spending £1.7bn a year on temporary accommodation for homeless households, up 62% over the last five years"

Today we wrote a joint letter to @AngelaRayner calling for urgent action to rebuild capacity in #SocialHousing after years of cuts.
This is vital to deliver @UKLabour ambition of a generation of new social homes, boost growth & solve the #HousingCrisis

⚠️The number of households in temporary accommodation surpassed 112,000 in the last quarter of 2023 - a 12.1% rise in a year and the highest-ever figure.
This cannot be ignored, the next government must prioritise TA in their homelessness strategy #GE24
The government’s dire record on homelessness has not only added to human misery but has taken a wrecking ball to local government budgets across the country
Some councils are spending up to 50% of their budgets on relieving homelessness. This is unsustainable.
We want to hear what policies you think the next govt should prioritise to get a grip on this emergency: https://t.co/gNMPfV3BaP
Thx to @insidehousing for running my latest musings although not really very amusing! A view on 35yrs of good intentions & good ideas at the time.
Robbing Peter to pay Paul – learning lessons from past efforts to address the temporary accommodation crisis https://t.co/OpJrZb2E6z
145,000 children in England go to bed each night without a home of their own. The inadequate supply of social housing should be treated as a national emergency. The next government must overhaul the housing system to deliver the high-quality, affordable, secure homes we all need.
This film by @Shelter is spot on👇
The housing crisis has been decades in the making, but it doesn’t have to be like this
Ahead of the general election please join us in calling on all political parties to build a new generation of social homes as part of a #PlanForHousing 🏡

34 pairs of shoes to represent the 34 children who died in temporary housing from 2019-2021, with homelessness recorded as a possible contributing factor. A whole classroom of children.
Change is long overdue. We look forward to working with all parties to make this a priority.
I’m working on housing/planning for @trustforlondon’s next strategy 2024-30 and want to interview great people in August. Which visionaries would you recommend a chat with? Please actively think of people of colour, disabled people, LGBT; our sector lacks diversity. DMs open.
.@londoncouncils estimates that *160,000* Londoners live in temporary accommodation.

🏘️NEW DATA
The number of households living in Temporary Accommodation in England have been released today by @LUHC. There are 101,300 households and 127,220 homeless children living in TA.
If Temporary Accommodation isn’t prioritised whilst tackling damp and mouldy housing, the most vulnerable will still be trapped in homes like these two (both in this week, both Housing Association managed)
“What bigger reason could there be to act than the number of children that have died in temporary accommodation… between 2019-2021, TA was a contributing factor in the deaths of 34 children” @Siobhain_Mc
These deaths were preventable and they are unacceptable.
