Reminds me of a fantastical McCarthy-Dundon plot to do away with a witness. They planned to shoot RPGs at a police van as it drove down the highway. Failed because their arms dealers turned out to be British intelligence
Maybe a skill issue on my part but I find layman blogs far more helpful than LLMs for building intuition on complex, new stuff. As an example, learning about protein design models atm. This LessWrong post is helpful https://t.co/AxHKcp8BXR, as are many of Derek Lowe’s blog posts. Why?
Ketogenic diets helps treat paediatric epilepsy. This is so weird. Suspected due to ketones being able to cross the blood-brain barrier, and as the metabolic state shifts to working on ketones, brain cancers struggle to keep up.
How the he'll is this bit of commentary so under appreciated ? Its tge greatest bit of tv commentary I've ever heard in my life @thomasniblock@ConorMcManus_15
You realize that in North Mayo there is a small clique of young men named after NBA players?
Rio (Ferdinand) Mortimer
Kobe (Bryant) McDonald
(Michael) Jordan Flynn
belief is in very short supply and people who believe hard in the right thing and act fast on it can do very well. No sophisticated tricks or strategies. Ted Lasso approach
Investing is really hard and SA prescience was incredibly impressive and likely should still be funded and respected.
That said, anyone who has experience in public markets could somewhat easily see this was One Big Trade and so probably there should have been way better views on risk besides buying index-level puts and (i would guess but have no info) shorting names that probably stacked your factor exposure. As I called out, you could kind of see them seemingly learning this in real-time based on 13Fs (imperfect info, I know).
In portfolios with high vol assets you have to size relatively precisely and also understand your correlations/factors..and probably don't use leverage.
We've talked about this ad nauseum but as momentum and narrative driven assets become more of a thing, the unwinds become more violent and if you are one of the main "in size" holders of the momentum assets, you likely will run into issues on that unwinding (that said, it is kind of remarkable because people were literally bidding the 13F assets which should create some structural follow-buyers of your bags if you're SA).
Perhaps to the point on narrative-hopping, the other thing that happens is you start to have to move deeper into stack and into lower liquidity names, which is at odds with scaling AUM as SA did so aggressively.
Lastly and probably most importantly, this is one of the reasons why I hate the concept of mixing public/private into a single vehicle (which many LPs have tried to convince us to do), because you end up with weird distortions when a thesis runs against you and *especially* when you're a forced seller of some kind you have to start to liquidate, at discounts, your best assets because they are usually the most liquid (again, especially when you use those assets as margin to gain leverage).
Anyways, it's awesome that one can go from essay to billions of AUM in ~2 years and I'd imagine everyone who seeded SA is still very glad to have done so. We shouldn't grave dance but should instead internalize some of the learnings here and appreciate someone who basically called their shot and executed on it but (thus far) didn't land the plane.
One of the most incredible things about this win is the camaraderie among every person. Cillian O'Connor and Aidan O'Se on bench, Andy and Colm Boyle on management team, Lee Keegan commentating, half the team grew up watching these guys trying to do it since 2005
