Daughter of local landlord. Unionist by tradition, but drawn to the romanticism of the Anglo-Irish literary revival. Part of semester project for @IrishNsu
There should never be shame associated with a culture. It pains me to turn away from my father, to think differently than him, but I can’t help but think that the Irish has valid reasons for their rebel cause. (2/2) #nsuirishhistory
Yes, I feel for the Irish cause. As Douglas Hyde once said, “It is a most disgraceful shame the way in which Irishmen are brought up. They are ashamed of their language, institutions, and of everything Irish.” (1/2) #nsuirishhistory
My father described the IRA as heathens for killing Constable Agar and as horrific as the death of a man is, I can’t help but feel for their cause as all they want is to have freedom. #nsuirishhistory
I send all my condolences to the Constable Agar’s family. This is such an event that one can never anticipate. I offer them this verse from Isaiah 49:13, “For the Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.” May he rest in peace. #nsuirishhistory
We went into town for church to see the R.I.C. arresting people in Trim. Mother dragged me away from such a sight, but I couldn’t help but stare. My father says they’re bad men, and I should agree, but I can’t help but not see them as my father does. #nsuirishhistory
We were just awoken by a message being sent from Dublin Castle. Mother and I wait upstairs as father paces downstairs. He seems angry as he talks to our butler. I can only hear a few words, but I think I heard something about an attack. #nsuirishhistory
I overheard one of the servants saying that a friend of theirs was warned to get out of the streets in Ballivor while going to the well. If the man who gave him the warning was part of the IRA, then I fear for what will happen in Ballivor tonight. #nsuirishhistory
Lately father has been receiving more letters form his friends in Dublin, most of which are part of the administration. With each one, his anger soars. He seemed even more infuriated when he found my copy of The Celtic Twilight by W.B. Yeats, nearly dumping it. #nsuirishhistory
I wonder what a life like that of Countess Markievicz’s must be like, so full of adventure and excitement. As much as I would like to lead such a life, my father would be extremely displeased with me. #nsuirishhistory
#OnThisDay 1919 Six IRA prisoners escape from Strangeways Prison in Manchester. The first two over the wall were MPs Piaras Béaslaí and Austin Stack. The escapees were aided by friendly Irish window cleaners who “coincidentally” in the area with big ladders.

"I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart's core."
-"The Lake Isle of Innisfree", W.B. Yeats
#OnThisDay 1920 Mid-Clare IRA attack the Ruan RIC barracks in their bare feet so as not to alert local dogs. They attacked in the morning while the guards were asleep & one had left for milk. One RIC man was killed. A large cache of guns & ammo was captured.
