๐จ BREAKING: Manchester United legend Lou Macari has been awarded an MBE in the Kingโs Birthday Honours.
The former United striker has been recognised for his outstanding work with the Macari Foundation, which has helped tackle homelessness in Stoke-on-Trent over the past decade.
A fantastic honour for a true footballing great ๐
A few notes on this:
๐บWhy would the Glazers sell the club? Why would they not sell the club? The Glazers decision making is based on emotions, not logic or even greed.
Owning a football club is and will always be a bad investment. This is indisputable and cannot be underlined enough. Nobody buys a football club only to make money.
Malcom Glazer bought Manchester United for ยฃ270m in cash (the rest was leveraged). Had Malcom just taken that cash investment, not leveraged it, and invested it straight into a safe Nasdaq index fund, the value today would be ยฃ6.75 bn. Had he leveraged his investment on Nasdaq, it would be worth north of ยฃ10 bn today.
Facts are, had the Glazers sold all shares in United to Qatar on 1 July 2023, and invested ยฃ4.5 bn in a Nasdaq index fund -- the investment would be worth ยฃ8.75 bn today.
As a part of a global eco system, some investments can go into sports. But like if you are a private investor, the choice is not hard. Like 'so what should we invest in now, AI, humanoid robots, self-driving cars, banks, properties, mines -- or -- an english football club functioning on a lawless market with costs being driven out of control since it is competing with multiple nation backed clubs?'
When United was put up for sale -- Qatar and Ratcliffe got furthest. Not ordinary common investors. It is not a business case. Malcom Glazer perhaps had an opportunity to make a good investment had he sold all shares around 2010. Never now.
So, some points that must be considered:
*At least some of the Glazers likes sports and to invest in sports. They are wealthy as it is. Think of it as a hobby.
*None of the current living Glazers are successful business people. They inherited a fortune.
*There will definitely be an ego element involved. The name will forever be tarnished with 'ruining United' if they leave the club in the state it is now.
๐บWhat are the mechanics of the deal? Who can force who to sell, and at what price? In all likelihood -- this would be a purely negotiated deal.
There are extensive reports about different contractual mechanisms that exist in the agreements between the Glazers and Ineos. They are often somewhat correct.
But this is the one area where I actually has some real knowledge, and from my view point, both sides are well protected. What I mean with this is -- there are two alternatives: (a) a third party buyer could come in with guns blazing, try to convince certain owners to sell, and then force other unwilling owners to sell. It is in that situation the contractual provisions about right of first offer, right of first refusal, tag along, drag-along etc comes into play. Or (b) a third party could come in and sit down with the owners and try to work something out.
(a) is very very risky, unpredictable, costly and what not. I see no issue with (b).
๐บWhat will Ineos do? This is what I always have said about Ineos. It is a group that consist of 3 major business divisions and in addition to that, several smaller ventures. We have some insight into a couple of the individual divisions -- and no insight into the situation at the top. Ratcliffe could be the richest guy on the planet or be on the brink of bankruptcy. We would have no idea.
Hence, it is very hard to predict what Ineos would do.
