@JeanneWHarvey@mstewartscience Yes! My PreK-5 students LOVE nonfiction. I’m considering rearranging our space to put the nonfiction books on my shorter shelves to be more accessible to younger students.
@Lily_Warrior @UMBC So again, thank you to your daughter and thank you to you for sharing your family’s story. I hope more people take the time to teach and learn about this period in our history and its long term impact on so many families & communities.
@Lily_Warrior In college I had the chance to study this history as an American Studies major at @UMBC. Our professor encouraged us to dig deeper into the history as well as the reasons for the whitewashing and strategic omission of the internment. Nothing short of perspective shattering.
Looking for some great, elementary appropriate manga and some new graphic novels to add to our collection, any suggestions? Bonus points for anything available from scholastic bc we’ve got some bookfair funds saved up. #kidlit#elementarylibrary#manga#graphicnovels
@Sayantani16 First, as a mom & school librarian, thank you for your writing!
My feeling is that your truth is whatever you’re inspired to write. You write what you love and what you are excited to share. Others can write their truth.
@jdkburke@FLFreedomRead These are books being exchanged in the classroom, so under the vague wording of the law it may apply. As pointed out by others, this is similar to each book at the book fair needing approval.
@kellyyanghk Many of my students will say that they don’t know what kind of books they like. A great way to get to the same point is to ask them about their favorite movies or tv shows! I’ve found so many great book connections this way.
@Jarrett_Lerner I’m not surprised! Library policies and procedures should be left up to the experts in the field- librarians themselves. Having to find reviews for every book in a series must be nearly impossible.
@Jarrett_Lerner The review policy has definitely made it difficult to bring in books by less well known and/or local authors. For others, a review database would actually be super helpful!
@Jarrett_Lerner I think this is pretty common, not as a law, but as a policy. It helps librarians make good book selections without being able to read every single book we bring in & it backs us up if there’s a challenge. However, like you point out, there are definitely limitations!
@RachelDelahaye This is great, thank you! I’m an elementary librarian who would love to stay in touch with some of the amazing authors, illustrators, and artists of all kinds that I’ve met through this app. https://t.co/iDDBeBDiOW
