I leave tomorrow. Easter with my parents first, then Louisville to meet my brothers, then all of us in a car headed west. San Francisco by the 11th. Donor visits. A flight home to Luc.

It's a lot of ground for two weeks. It's also, somehow, my life.

Scott McKenzie recorded that song for people who were leaving — who pointed themselves west because west was the direction of not yet, but something.

I've been that person.

Not in 1967, not to San Francisco, but leaving has its own grammar regardless of the destination. The priesthood. The country. The self that fit everyone else so well.
