As Hurricane Ian battered Florida last week, leaving neighborhoods in Naples looking like they had been swallowed by a river, Johnny Lauder dove into the murky, debris-filled waters that others were trying to escape. https://t.co/sdOe9hiN9D
The 49-year-old was on a mission to save his 84-year-old mother, Karen, who uses a wheelchair.
She lives a few blocks away and had made a panicked call on Wednesday as the water rushing into her house reached her chest. https://t.co/sdOe9h1K7D
As they were about to leave the residence, they realized one of Karen’s neighbors needed help.
Lauder’s son pushed his grandmother’s wheelchair through the water, which was below his waist, while Lauder carried the other woman to a hotel.
They were safe. https://t.co/sdOe9h1K7D
After Lauder wrapped her in a set of dry sheets, the two waited inside for the water to recede — by that time, Lauder’s younger son arrived to help pull Karen out of her flooded house.
The three began making their way back to Lauder’s son’s home. https://t.co/sdOe9h1K7D

"She’s in a warm dry bed and I couldn’t be happier...I’ve been in rough situations but when it’s go time, it’s go time. You flip that switch and everything shuts off and you have to stay focused," says Johnny Lauder who rescued his 84-year-old mother from Hurricane Ian flooding.
