An Amtrak passenger train halted in Wilson County late Saturday after it was struck by gunfire with one bullet piercing a train car window and striking a female passenger in the head.

Deputies located an adult female suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was alert and conscious when first responders arrived on scene. Wilson County Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to East Carolina University Health Medical Center for treatment.

The train stopped on the tracks while investigators gathered evidence and made photographs of the side of the passenger train.

During the initial investigation, it was determined that the train may have been struck while traveling through the city limits of Wilson North Carolina
