Pam Stubbs: SEND THE POLICE ROUND!

@PostOffice accounts showed £9,000 missing from Pam Stubbs' branch over Christmas 2009. The branch was shut. Nobody was in the building. The Post Office told her to resign.

Quick background if you missed this scandal. The Post Office accused hundreds of local postmasters of stealing money and prosecuted many of them, based on shortfalls shown by its own accounting system. A postmaster is the person who runs a village post office.

Pam Stubbs was one of them.

She ran the Barkham Post Office near Wokingham for about 10 years after her husband died. In 2009 the branch was being rebuilt, so her terminal moved into a portakabin in the car park. The shortfalls arrived. By June 2010 the Post Office claimed she had lost around £25,000 and wanted it back.

She had recorded every transaction on paper. When her manager said lots of people blamed the computer system and nobody had ever proved it, she asked for the back office data to compare with her own records.

She also told him to send the police round if he thought she was a thief and she would see him in court.

She was suspended without notice. The next morning another auditor turned up.

Then it gets better. £7,000 of the demand turned out to be a mistake. The Post Office corrected it and the demands kept coming, because nobody told the department sending them.

Pam Stubbs became a lead claimant in Bates v Post Office and gave evidence at the High Court in 2018. That trial helped crack the whole scandal open.

Today she is still speaking out. She wants the word compensation dropped and redress delivered, meaning a life put back the way it was before the accusation. In 2024 she said nobody at the Post Office accepted any wrongdoing while @Fujitsu at least owned up.

Fujitsu said it would pay in. By early 2026, MPs on the Business and Trade Committee reported that Fujitsu had contributed nothing to the redress bill. About £1.4B has been paid to over 11,300 people across three schemes and thousands are still waiting.

The Post Office is 100% owned by the government, so the government shares the blame.
