As a Chartered Accountant, I could not stop myself from writing this.
ITR filing and Tax Audit have altogether different scope and purpose. ITR filing is mainly compilation of data and submission of information by the assessee. Tax Audit, on the other hand, is a statutory assurance under Sec 44AB, involving detailed examination of books, verification of more than 40 clauses in Form 3CD, and reconciliations relating to GST, TDS, PF/ESI, loans and related party transactions.
In the regular course, there is usually a gap of about two months between ITR due dates and Audit due dates. This year, however, barely 14-15 days have been allowed.
Such compressed timelines make it difficult to maintain the quality and accuracy expected from an audit, increase the chances of errors and omissions, and ultimately defeat the very purpose of reporting.
This is not about asking for extensions year after year. It is about ensuring that the compliance framework itself provides a sufficient and realistic timeline, keeping in view the distinct scope and responsibilities of audit as compared to return filing.
I certainly hope @FinMinIndia & @IncomeTaxIndia will consider the legitimate concerns of professionals.
For, non corporate entities format, we have escalated the matter & working to get the relief to the best possible.
