Samsung really dropped the ball with the Galaxy S26 Ultra display

Everyone got excited when Samsung reps at the Unpacked event and press briefings straight-up said the S26 Ultra (and the whole series) finally upgraded to a true 10-bit panel.

That would mean over 1 billion colors instead of the old 16.7 million on 8-bit screens. Smoother gradients, way less banding in skies, sunsets, HDR videos, stuff we've been waiting years for, especially since phones from OnePlus, Xiaomi, and even Apple have had native 10-bit for a long time.

People pre-ordered based on that promise. Tech sites ran headlines about it being Samsung's "best display ever." Leakers hyped it up months earlier too.

Sadly, it's still 8-bit color depth. The whole lineup (S26, S26+, Ultra) uses 8-bit panels.

It looks like Samsung is using Frame Rate Control (FRC) to fake smoother colors and reduce banding. It's 8-bit + FRC, not real 10-bit hardware.

Sure, FRC helps, hands-on videos show less banding than the S25 Ultra in some scenes, and the screen is brighter with great anti-reflective coating. But it's still a software trick, not the full native upgrade we were told about.

Competitors have been doing true 10-bit for years without tricks.This feels lazy from Samsung in 2026.

The flagship should lead, not play catch-up with dithering hacks while charging premium prices. Misleading buyers during launch and then quietly walking it back days later? Not cool.
