#TheEnvironment March: meet our amazing #Sheroes of water, land, climate and sustainability. Nominated by last year's Women's takeover issue nominees, from RachelCarson to @scarlettOwest
Who would you nominate? #IWD2022
Very concerning to see the arrest of the Mayor of Istanbul @imamoglu_int. @annehidalgo.bsky.social & many other mayors are calling for his release

To those who opposed a clear reference to phase out of fossil fuels during the #COP28 Climate Conference, I want to say:
Whether you like it or not, fossil fuel phase out is inevitable. Let’s hope it doesn’t come too late.
COP28 is now on the verge of complete failure. The world desperately needs to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible, but this obsequious draft reads as if OPEC dictated it word for word. It is even worse than many had feared. It is “Of the Petrostates, By the Petrostates and For the Petrostates.” It is deeply offensive to all who have taken this process seriously. There are 24 hours left to show whose side the world is on: the side that wants to protect humanity’s future by kickstarting the orderly phase out of fossil fuels or the side of the petrostates and the leaders of the oil and gas companies that are fueling the historic climate catastrophe. In order to prevent COP28 from being the most embarrassing and dismal failure in 28 years of international climate negotiations, the final text must include clear language on phasing out fossil fuels. Anything else is a massive step backwards from where the world needs to be to truly address the climate crisis and make sure the 1.5°C goal doesn’t die in Dubai.
I have come back to #COP28, because we are on the brink of climate disaster & this conference must mark a turning point.
I am here to renew my urgent appeal to leaders:
Recommit to the 1.5°C warming limit.
End the fossil fuel age.
Deliver climate justice.
Make #COP28 count.
CEOs.
Investors.
Health professionals.
Scientists.
Academics.
Youth.
Faith leaders.
NGOs.
+1700 climate leaders have signed a letter to achieve a historic outcome at #COP28.
This has to be the COP where we agree on the rapid phase-out of #FossilFuels.
As @algore said yesterday, #COP28 will succeed if there is a collective agreement on phase-out. Otherwise, it will be a failure.

My second panel at #COP28 yesterday, moderated by @CateSarfatti (Managing Director for Inclusion & Global Leadership, @c40cities), addressed the urban dimension of loss & damage.
Fellow panelists included @HumzaYousaf (First Minister, Scotland), @yakisawyerr (Mayor of Freetown), @Anne_Hidalgo (Mayor of Paris) & Nicki Becker (Co-founder, Jóvenes por el Clima).
I spoke about the unique climate challenges that cities face. I strongly believe that if cities are at the frontlines of the problem, they must also be at the frontlines of the solution.
I greatly applauded @c40cities new L&D report and new funding partnership with the #Scottish Government that targets climate action in the #GlobalSouth. Meaningful partnerships are truly the way forward!

These projects demonstrate the power of innovative, creative, women-led climate solutions.
It is vital to invest in women – which is exactly what the @Women4Climate mentorship programme achieves in cities globally.

This #InternationalWomensDay it’s vital to remember that women are most affected by climate breakdown but often left out of decision-making.
City-led, women-led innovations are crucial to solving the climate crisis – which is why C40 founded @Women4Climate.

Fascinating dinner discussion tonight in Rome with @ellyesse —one of Italy’s most promising politicians. Talked about climate, inequality, innovation and participatory democracy. And most of all the need for “leaders to lead” (as @miaamormottley has been calling for!).
