Entering his 15th year since debut, his activities are becoming even more active
The news that Wanna One, which created countless memorable moments during its roughly two years of activity from 2017, would reunite for the first time in seven years excited many K-pop fans.
“The members and I have continued to keep in touch over the years. Thankfully, we were given a wonderful opportunity, and we’re able to work together again. Just thinking about being active as a group is exciting, and I’m really looking forward to meeting the fans again as well.”
Last year, his lead drama Study Group became a hit. The youth action drama follows a student who enrolls in a high school full of troublemakers and forms a study group so he can focus on studying. Hwang Minhyun received praise for his portrayal of Yoon Gamin, a student who is poor at studying but strong in fights.
This year, he has been confirmed to return for Season 2. After completing his military service, he lost 6 kilograms in preparation for filming.
“I think one of the memorable aspects of Season 1 was Yoon Gamin’s journey of finding members to study with. In Season 2, together with the study group members who have already become his friends, he’ll work to resolve conflicts with opposing forces.
I think viewers will be able to see action scenes that are even more powerful than in Season 1. There are also many new characters appearing, so that’s another highlight to look forward to.”
Having first challenged himself with a historical drama in the Alchemy of Souls series and now action through this project, he continues to grow as an actor.
“I’d like to try playing a villain as well. I’d like to create a character who is a villain but isn’t hateful, someone attractive and compelling.
I’m also interested in romance projects and Japanese productions. During my NU’EST days, I appeared in a Japanese film (Their Distance / Shiranai, Futari). At that time, I felt that Japan has a unique color and sensibility. I’d like to stay in Japan and create a work there.”
In March, he marked his 15th year since debut.
In the entertainment industry, where careers can rise and fall quickly, remaining a star for so many years is not easy. Yet Hwang Minhyun continues to move forward with flexibility and strength, armed with his sincere personality and strong professionalism.
“I think the timing of opportunities is different for everyone. There were times when things didn’t go the way I expected, but I’ve come this far believing, ‘I will definitely succeed.’
Going forward, I won’t forget how grateful I am to the fans, and I’ll continue to do my very best in everything I can.”

<Thoughts on Hwangdo after reuniting for the first time in 2 years>
Not only as an artist, but also as an actor and MC, HWANG MINHYUN is active in many fields.
After completing his military service in December last year, he released a solo song in February this year. In April, Wanna One resumed activities, and he is also preparing to film a drama in which he will play the lead role. In his 15th year since debut, he is experiencing a second peak in his career.
He said that his 1 year and 9 months of military service taught him a lot.
“While serving in the military, I read the letters that Hwangdo (fandom name) sent through social media and thought about everyone. Being in a different environment from the entertainment industry made me appreciate things that I had previously taken for granted even more.
For example, I became able to relate to and understand the daily lives of people who work at companies or live according to regular schedules at school. Because of that, I became even more grateful that people made time in their lives to come see me and support me.
During my military service, I spent my time improving myself by practicing singing and studying Japanese so that I could show fans a more grown-up version of myself when we met again.”
After completing military service, he immediately started a fan meeting tour.
In Japan as well, he held his first solo fan meeting since December 2020 at Tokyo International Forum, attracting 4,500 people across three performances.
“I thought a lot about what kind of stage Hwangdo would want to see after such a long time apart, so I prepared a medley stage featuring my new song and songs that fans love.
I especially wanted everyone to hear my new song ‘Truth,’ which expresses how I felt during military service, that even though we were physically apart, my heart was always with them.
In addition, in Japan, I prepared a J-pop cover song (Utada Hikaru’s ‘First Love’) and dance challenges that I thought Japanese fans would enjoy.”
His clear and beautiful voice and noble visuals, which have earned him the nickname “Emperor,” remain unchanged.
Not only that, he returned with Japanese skills equal to, or even better than, when he was actively promoting in Japan at the time of his debut.
“I didn’t have many opportunities to use Japanese in Korea, so for the fan meeting, I spent every day from one month before the show watching YouTube and listening to podcasts to get used to Japanese.
In January, I went on a trip to Hokkaido. Since all of my friends live in Busan and don’t get many chances to see snow, I really wanted to take them to Hokkaido in winter at least once. Seeing how happy they were when they saw the snow made me happy too.
After quite a struggle to find a place, we finally had soup curry, and it was really delicious. We also rented a car and went to Biei. Because of the heavy snowfall, the expressway was closed and we had to use local roads instead, so the round trip ended up taking 10 hours. Looking back on it now, that’s a good memory too (laughs).
Next, I’d like to experience Sapporo in the summer as well.”
English Translation ✌🏻
MC: If someone knows about Korea, you don’t really look like a Busan guy, right?
MH: In Seoul, I’m always told that. When I meet someone for the first time and say, “I’m from Busan,” everyone goes, “Eh?!” They’re surprised.
MC: You kind of give off a Seoul vibe.
MH: That’s right. Stylish (well put-together)
🤣🤣🤣
MH: Don’t I seem like a gentle type?
MC: So…does your Busan dialect come out when you speak? The Busan dialect.
MH: When I’m with Busan friends or family, it does come out a little, but I end up mixing it with the standard language used in Seoul.
MC: Ah, it gets mixed.
MH: Yes, it gets mixed. So if someone tells me, “Try speaking in dialect,” it doesn’t come out right away.
MC: You get used to it (standard Seoul language).
MH: Yes.
MC: But when you say “Busan man” or “Busan dialect,” doesn’t it have a strong image?
MH: It does. The energy is high.
MC: You have a soft image. It’s amazing.

English Translation ✌🏻
MH: As for Fukuoka…I’ve never been there before, but Yatai (street food stalls).
MC: If you don’t go to Yatai today...
MH: Yatai, yeah. While eating something, I want to drink a sip of Japanese sake. Just one sip.
MC: People who would like to come?
**audience raises their hands**
MC: Please feel free to do it in your dreams (🤣🤣🤣)
MH: That’s cruel, Furuya-san
(古家さんにひどいですねって🤣🤣🤣)
MC: But..I see..Yatai is nice, isn’t it.
MH: I also want to go to Yatai…
