Today is my birthday..

This morning, when I was taking a walk, I heard this song by Rascal Flatts and these lyrics really hit me.

“There comes a time in everyone's life when all you can see are the years passing by, and I have made up my mind that those days are gone.”

If a few lines in a song could describe me, today, it is these.

“I’m Movin On”

I didn't see it coming, but I became that person. The one who could see nothing else but the years speeding by. The girl who, without knowing it, stopped living and started dying.

It began when my house was suddenly quiet. No little ones underfoot to care for, 24/7, no teenagers to worry about, every second of the day. No one who needs me, around the clock. You'd think I'd be breathing a sigh of relief, but that's not what happened at all.

I never realized how much being needed was like a drug for me. It filled me up, made me feel good about myself and gave me significance and meaning. When it was gone, I lost my sense of purpose and felt like all I had left to do was watch the years pass.

For the first time in my life, I began dealing with depression. I never had before. I've always been a positive, happy person. But, when I was suddenly left alone with just me, fear began to creep in. 

Of course, there is much in this life that will bring joy, but never complete joy. Not until I come face to face with the one who gave His life for me will I be whole and that's precisely what God wants me to hold on to.

So, I have made up my mind to stop seeing the years passing by and to rest in the sovereign hands of a gracious God who knows me best and loves me still.

He began this work in me and will complete it. He will complete me. Not with anything else, but Himself.

There is something so liberating about losing what we cling to for life, and coming to terms with the truth that there is nothing on this earth that will ever be enough. 

Because only Jesus is enough.
