O'Connell led the fight for rights for Catholics in Ireland after centuries of persecution, eventually leading to the repeal of the Penal Laws in 1829, which had banned Catholics from Mass, many jobs, education and other areas for centuries

O'Connell died while on pilgrimage in Genoa, leaving his heart to be buried in Rome, though the current location of it is a mystery
