Mary Maloney confronted 34-year-old Winston Churchill over remarks he had made criticizing women’s suffrage. When he refused to apologize, she repeatedly rang a large bell each time he tried to speak, drowning out his voice and bringing the meeting to a standstill.

Mary Maloney was an Irish suffragette born near Dublin in 1878. She was initially a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union before joining the breakaway Women’s Freedom League, which favored civil disobedience over property damage.

Her best-known clash with the 34-year-old Winston Churchill came during the 1908 Dundee by-election, when he was campaigning to return to Parliament. Maloney followed him from one campaign event to another, demanding that he apologize for his dismissive comments about women’s suffrage.

Each time Churchill attempted to speak, she rang a large handbell, often drowning out his voice. At one factory meeting, he eventually gave up trying to continue, remarking that if she believed the bell was a valid argument, she was welcome to keep ringing it.

The press dubbed her “La Belle Maloney,” and her week-long campaign made her one of the most recognizable suffragette activists of the period. She later staged other high-profile protests, including climbing the statue of Richard the Lionheart outside the Palace of Westminster and refusing to come down until she had finished delivering a speech calling for votes for women.

Although Churchill’s position on women’s suffrage softened over time, he repeatedly opposed the full voting rights sought by campaigners, making him a frequent target of suffragette protests.

Women over the age of 30 who met certain property qualifications gained the right to vote in 1918, while equal voting rights with men were finally established in 1928.
