Ben Sasse: "What’s really happening is these superdevices in our pockets — the largest tools any median individual’s ever had access to in all of human history — allow our consciousness to leave the time and place where we actually live, the places where we break bread, the people who are living next door to us, the people that you can physically touch and hug, the small platoons of real community, and we allow our consciousness to go really far away"

#ONStorm#ONwx The bird migration is showing strong yet again tonight across Southern Ontario! 🐦
This time, the radar view we’re looking at is from Franktown near Ottawa. At first glance, it looks like widespread rain is moving across Eastern Ontario. But if you step outside, you’ll notice it’s completely dry.
That’s because what you’re seeing on radar isn’t precipitation at all. It’s thousands upon thousands of birds taking off shortly after sunset as they continue their incredible journey south for the winter.
Weather radar is so sensitive it picks up these massive flocks in flight, painting the screen as if it were a rainstorm. It’s a fascinating look at one of the great natural migrations happening right above us.
Similar to what we saw last night in Southern Ontario! Which turned out to be a record number of birds in the air at once - over 1 billion across America!
It’s also a good reminder of how we can help these birds along the way. Bright city and yard lights can confuse or disorient migrating birds, sometimes leading to fatal collisions. Turning off any unnecessary lights at night during migration season gives them a clearer, safer path south.
Have you noticed or heard the birds passing overhead where you are?

@67Dodge@Sall_Goodman Definitely takes some time to warm up in Nottawasaga Bay! It was refreshing to say the least. September is perfect. Enjoy your time here.
we need to bring back words like wastrel, rogue, ruffian, ne’er-do-well. there is an epidemic of miscreants doing shenanigans and we have lost the vocabulary to describe them.

November is a month of inbetweening, unsettled both in temperament and intention. Descending into the valley I discover where the cold air has slept. The mist catches my breath as I exhale more in sympathy, wishing that it would commit itself to snow.
How relieved do you think the operator was to get off the phone with Jim Croce after receiving that unsolicited 10-cent trauma dump? “I’m not your fucking therapist, sir.”
