Paying for kidneys is banned in every developed country but the majority of people who need a transplant can't get one. Further, many who want to donate a kidney (even to a relative) cannot, due to incompatibility. Therefore, computer scientists have invented integer programming algorithms to replace the function of currency by facilitating complex chains and cycles of kidney swaps. It's like advanced bartering. In the most simple case, you might give your kidney to someone else's kid and then that kid's parent gives their kidney to your kid. I occasionally see engagement-baiting posts about this couple, who left unlocked bikes on their lawn, waited for thieves to show up to try to steal the bikes, beat the thieves with baseball bats, and then posted videos of the beatings on YouTube.

The viral posts always note that they were arrested for doing this, but never tell you the disposition of the case or what happened to them. I was curious whether they went to prison, so I did a little research.

It turns out, the charges were dropped and the couple was not punished at all! Prosecutors wanted to charge assault with a deadly weapon for two incidents in which this couple beat bike thieves with metal baseball bats, videotaped themselves doing it and posted the videos online.

But a trial on these charges required testimony from the victims. Both victims were convicted felons, and neither would cooperate with police or prosecutors unless they got immunity for crimes they had committed, which the prosecutors were unwilling to give them.

Prosecutors were also worried that if they took this to trial, a jury would refuse to convict regardless of the evidence.
