@benboulware7@CoachVenables After morning conditioning was already over, the LB's had to put in more work thanks to a certain freshman not attending classes. Full court towel pushes with sweaty t-shirts, overhead medball stadium runs, and plank holds until failure....Mentally bulletproof afterwards, tho.
Day 24, Kings Across America
In Iowa City (Wisconsin-Iowa football)
An invitation from ex-Hawkeye and -Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding brought us to the greatest tailgate in creation, just two long spirals from Kinnick Stadium, in the expansive dual garages of a home owned by John Bobst (Iowa, 1999). On this raw and chilly late afternoon, 500 or 600 Hawkeye fans filtered through. Bobst didn’t know everyone, and he knew some uninvited probably have stopped for a free beer or the sausage-in-blankets wrapped in rigatoni and bacon. Welcome to Iowa! Nate handed us cans of Busch Lights—“Iowa’s craft beer,” he said—and brought us a plate of black, gold and white Oreos, with IN HEAVEN THERE IS NO BEER neatly written in the border of the state of Iowa. (Very tasty.) The best feature of the tailgate, on the wall of the first garage: 10 framed and autographed Iowa game jerseys. Kaeding’s is here, and Ed Podolak’s, and Marv Cook’s. They’re not necessarily stars. “Just guys who played at Iowa and came to the tailgate,” said Bobst. JOHNSON 38 … Who’s that? “Greg Johnson. I don’t think he ever played a snap, but he was on the practice team back in the nineties. Now he’s my banker. When he saw this, he got a little tear in his eye. He’s here every tailgate.” And there he was. Greg, CEO of Central State Bank, told me he was a cornerback in 1997 and ’98, and when he saw the framed jersey under Cook’s and Podolak’s, he told Bobst: “Get that thing off your wall! I don’t belong!” Yes he does. He wore the black and gold, and he's Bobst’s pal. That’s good enough for inclusion at the coolest tailgate in Iowa City. BTW: Iowa 42, Wisco 10. Thanks to Kirk and Mark Ferentz for the game tickets and the great night.
Americana factoid: The two punters in the game were from Australia—Iowa’s Rhys Dakin (Melbourne) and Wisconsin’s Atticus Bertrams (Sydney). They came from an Aussie program called Prokick Australia, which trains strong-legged kids to excel in punting and get scholarships to American colleges.
