The "Trauma Self" is the part of us that has adopted: beliefs, coping mechanisms, and patterns to survive.
Our trauma self is our protective self that we can heal:
The first step to handling a trauma response is recognizing it as a trauma response. Which doesn't mean, once we're recognized it as a trauma response, handling it will be obvious or easy-- but we can't manage a trauma response from a place of denial.
(Ask me how I know.)
HOW TO HEAL THE TRAUMA SELF:
1. Learn emotional regulation: trauma creates a disruption in our ability to self regulate. By practicing learning how to breathe and sit through our emotions, without reacting to them, we learn self regulation.
Trauma doesn’t just change the way you feel, it changes the way your body responds to stress. When there is a history of #trauma, it is harder to deactivate the flight and freeze response in order to return to social engagement. What can help change this? See thread below ⬇️
One of the first steps to helping children through #trauma is to teach them self-regulation coping strategies.
If you need some ideas on what strategies students can use when they fee upset or unfocused, check these out below.
#TraumaInformed
You can’t love someone out of their trauma. You can’t push someone enough to heal. You can’t rescue someone from their own choices. The instinct to view people as self improvement projects usually comes from having to ‘fix’ a parent— marriage issues, financial issues, become their therapist etc.
Facing trauma is part of life. A lot of people want to talk about how to avoid traumatic experiences, which is a good thing.
It's equally important to talk about how to cope after traumatic experiences do happen.
People who have support (someone to listen, to validate, and to take interest in) what someone's experienced are able to recover.
I've worked with many people who were met with:
- 'that wasn't a big deal'
- 'man up'
- 'get over it'
- 'don't be so sensitive'
- 'that didn't actually happen.'
This adds another layer of wounding and shame because we are wired to connect. When people invalidate our experiences, it's an emotional abandonment.
We need co-regulation: people who are connected to themselves and able to hold space for us.
It's through consistent co-regulation that we learn to be resilient. With the help of others, our nervous system regulates, and we can return to homeostasis.
Without co-regulation, we cannot cope with our emotions or experiences. Adult who can't emotionally regulate often: spiral quickly into rage, shut down (stonewall), can't seek solutions in conflict, and are highly sensitive to any form criticism.
Support from others shows teaches us how to support ourselves.
