Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Union Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of India, chaired a VC meeting with Deans of Fisheries Colleges, Fisheries Universities & Directors of ICAR Fisheries Institutes on aligning academia & research with National fisheries priorities and advancing the development of fisheries & aquaculture, with strong support from Fisheries Colleges and Universities.
Shri Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary, DoF, delivered a detailed presentation outlining the roadmap to strengthen research, innovation and capacity building in the sector, and highlighted expectations from Fisheries Colleges, Universities and ICAR Fisheries Institutes.
Key suggestions from Participants included participation of students in Fisheries Clusters and related activities, enhancement of research laboratory infrastructure, and AI-based pilot projects and technology integration.

Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Union Secretary, Department of Fisheries, GoI chaired the 11th edition of the Matsya Manthan Lecture Series, held today at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, in hybrid mode.
During the session, Shri Nishant Kumar, MD and Founder, King Fisheries, Ranchi, delivered a presentation on “Modern and Innovative Aquaculture Techniques: A Key Driver for Growth and Sustainability in India’s Fisheries Sector” and highlighted the deployment of modern systems such as automated RAS, intensive pond and reservoir-based culture, along with several innovations including integrated breeding, adoption of blockchain-based traceability, pearl culture, and solar-powered farms.
The session witnessed participation from senior officials of the Department of Fisheries, GoI; Departments of Fisheries of States/UTs; ICAR Institutions; FSI; CAA; CIFNET; CMFRI; and more than 100 participants who joined virtually.

The Department of Fisheries (DoF) GoI in collaboration with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) and the Department of Fisheries, UT of Puducherry, organized a training programme on “Installation of Transponders in ODM in the Puducherry Region” at Veerampattinam village, Puducherry today. The programme witnessed active participation from the Fishermen community.
Notably, DoF, GoI under PMMSY is implementing the National Rollout Plan for the Vessel Communication and Support System for the installation of indigenously developed transponders on One Lakh marine fishing vessels, with a total outlay of ₹364 crore across all 13 coastal States and Union Territories. So far, over 245 transponders have already been successfully installed in Puducherry.
