BREAKING: United Auto Workers today passed a resolution at its convention, 321-287, to divest from Israeli bonds.
With nearly 400,000 members, UAW becomes the largest US union to officially divest from Israel.
The vote received support from a range of sectors, including a large number of Michigan auto delegates, in addition to legal services and higher education.
The original call for divestment came from a wildcat strike of 2,000 mainly Arab American workers at Chrysler’s Dodge Main in 1973. Amid the genocide in Gaza, pro-Palestinian labor groups and UAW locals renewed and intensified their campaign.
Speakers motivated for the resolution by citing the union’s legacy of divesting from South African apartheid in 1978.
Something about Bob Dylan, who's influenced the arts as much as anybody, looking back on his life saying: "You're haunted by how little of it really mattered in the way you thought it would." Many people could speak those words, but there's nobody who could make 'em land harder.
This is insane:
• UofM cracks down on and arrests anti-genocide student protesters
• Ann Arbor prosecutor Eli Savit declines to prosecute
• UofM recruits MI AG and Zionist lunatic Dana Nessel to personally prosecute the case—HIGHLY unusual for such low-level charges
• Nessel forced to drop all charges to preempt court finding her unable to fairly prosecute the case due to her bias against Arabs and Muslims as well as her ties to Zionist extremist groups caught attempting to influence the court
• Nessel (a Democrat!) turns to Trump DoJ and Kash Patel to bring felony conspiracy charges against the students
The World Cup begins tomorrow, and many will watch the matches. Soccer reminds us of something we must not forget: life is not a race to show off on our own, but a path we learn to walk together. Anyone who does not know how to pass the ball, even if they have talent, has not yet understood the game. Anyone who does not know how to live with and for others has not yet understood life. #ApostolicJourney
“Gone are the days when City Hall will turn its back on queer New Yorkers […] City Hall will also not back down in the face of Federal attacks against trans New Yorkers”
— Zohran Mamdani on NYC’s newly established Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs at his Mayor Pride Party.
As earlier noted, a significant West Coast heatwave will build in the coming days, persisting at least 7-10 days. A strong & at least somewhat persistent ridge will bring war-to-hot conditions West Coast wide. Heat will be most anomalous in PacNW, but will also be present in CA.
Wanting democrats to do worse downballot in November just so your preferred Gov candidate has a moderately easier race against an R is really sad actually
Lockouts always help the party with both slots and rooting against one for your own party is unfathomable to me
The thing is, FDR really *didn’t* have anything to do on June 6
Eisenhower wrote about this. There’s a final meeting, go/no-go. Only Ike can decide. But once he decides, the room empties immediately and he’s left alone. He goes for a walk, he visits troops, he prepares a statement for if the invasion fails
That’s the thing about supreme command. Only you’ve said “go”, your role is finished. Everyone else has a job, you don’t, now. What happens is outside your control. You set the conditions, not the play by play
That goes doubly for FDR. He really *didn’t* have anything to do on D-Day. The most powerful man is also paradoxically the most powerless in situations like this
Pope Leo XIV on war in Iran:
"I think this has already been made very clear: the notion of a just war no longer applies. The problem is that just war theory developed in centuries when no one could have imagined the weapons we have today or humanity's capacity for destruction."
If you don’t live in CA I genuinely don’t care what you think about how long it takes to count our ballots. We’re incredibly proud of the voter enfranchisement in recent years, and I’m not worried about waiting a little while for accurate results that count everyone
I’ll take slower results if it makes voting easier, more inclusive, increases turnout, and adds extra safeguards, rather than prioritizing fast results (just for the sake of speed).
this is an interesting point in the new ted chiang piece – no one really claims that alphafold is conscious, or that sora or midjourney or dall-e are conscious
