The British Museum situation is symptomatic of what happens when you only fund short-term projects and additionality. If you want the nations heritage kept safe & recorded in perpetuity, you have to fund long-term cultural infrastructure & jobs. No short cuts.
UK museum visitor numbers are going up but @MuseumsAssoc reports that figures still lag behind pre-pandemic levels. According to the annual report by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions the overall visitor number was 23% lower in 2022 than 2019.

Terry Hall, dead at just 63 - such a loss. The sound of the Specials + his biting lyrics perfectly encapsulated what it was to live through the Thatcher years. I'm playing back-to-back tracks today to celebrate his creativity and in recognition of our current Thatcher 2.0 times.
The Specials were a celebration of how British culture was envigorated by Caribbean immigration but the onstage demenour of their lead singer was a reminder that they were in the serious business of challenging our perception of who we were in the late 1970s. RIP Terry Hall

The largest dedicated grant funder of the UK’s heritage just announced a new licensing policy, requiring CC-BY 4.0 for their projects. They also say "no new rights should arise in non-original materials resulting from the reproduction of public domain works." #OpenGLAM
I've always loved this museum. If a new name encourages more people to come to visit it - a great idea!👍
