I've just finished my first week in a *brand new* role at @NottmTrentUni. It's been a great week with a lovely team. Very excited to be part of a forward-thinking team working toward student behaviour change around sexual violence 🙌
So proud of our Researcher Chloe - presenting on new @HarmlessUK research on trauma connected to suicide loss. Look out for this research on publication - analysing the nuances the impact suicide loss has on particular relationships to the individual lost @lifevssuicide
Brilliant engagement from our #SBConference2024 delegates. Our @HarmlessUK research found gender disparities in first and lasting responses to suicide bereavement. Women found to score much higher on trauma and depression. Helpful to pose the question why? to everyone today.
Here's a behind the scenes peek at what it looks like to set up before a @HarmlessUK@lifevssuicide#SBConference2024 session - our final for this year. A tech run-through, note at the ready & virtual team huddle before we go live 🙌🙌
So heartbreaking to hear stories from participants in the research led by @ArchwayDiva. I won't forget the sentiment "the activism that comes from experience" that Trish spoke about. It's that personal connection to suicide that often fuels our fire #SBConference2024@HarmlessUK
Chairing Debi Roberts from @THE_OLLIE_FOUND at today's #SBConference2024. An interesting talk about the side-effects & paradoxical reactions to medication in connection to suicide. The conflict of anti-depressant use in supporting people without increasing risk 💜 @HarmlessUK
Sensitive topic at our #SBConference2024 but I'm wearing a smile this #WorldSuicidePreventionDay2024 as I'm here. Alive. Contented (albeit tired). Able to chair a conference because I made a choice many years ago to seek support & thankfully received it #recovery@HarmlessUK
World #SuicidePrevention Day.
Suicide is a global problem - an estimated 700,000 take their own lives each year.
Fuelled by poverty, abuse, mental ill-health, isolation.
Prevention is possible, urgent & a shared task.
#WSPD2024
A useful reminder that different types of proximity to a suicide can have a profound impact on those exposed to, affected or directly bereaved. Services must consider all individuals/groups related to this to prepare a sensitive response to suicide #SBConference2024
On #WorldSuicidePreventionDay2024 let's continue changing the narrative. How can we start the conversation? Use the word suicide. Reach out to someone we're worried about. De-stigmatise help-seeking. It's awful to feel like life isn't worth living. But help is available 💜
Between 2019–21, the suicide rate per 100,000 was 11.2 in Nottingham and 10.3 in Nottinghamshire. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy and we pledge to help change the narrative. For support: https://t.co/3vAH32uJMp

I love the Q&A portion of our online conference sessions. @sandyskaur giving some really helpful guidance on working with Punjabi and South Asian communities in response to our delegates questions #SBConference2024@HarmlessUK@lifevssuicide @letstalknlearn @sehhat_uk
"If a room doesn't have one person of colour on a panel or representation, the block has already been created". Let's do more to include *everyone* in suicide prevention conversations #SBConference2024@HarmlessUK@lifevssuicide @letstalknlearn @sehhat_uk@sandyskaur
Similar barriers exist in all communities that prevent open conversations on suicide. We still need to do *much* more to address the stigma & provide culturally-appropriate services for specific communities #SBConference2024@HarmlessUK@lifevssuicide @letstalknlearn @sehhat_uk
@sandyskaur@sehhat_uk research on suicide in Punjabi communities. One participant said they didn't realise how many people they'd lost to suicide until given the chance to take part 💜 Suicide has a far-reaching, devastating impact @HarmlessUK@lifevssuicide#SBConference2024
Insightful, emotive video touching on stigma, taboo and barriers to mental health support in Punjabi communities. The full video "Haneri" talks through Ruby's story, available on YouTube @sandyskaur@sehhat_uk@HarmlessUK@lifevssuicide @letstalknlearn #SBConference2024
@sandyskaur talking about the reach of social media in extending the impact that suicide can have. Our interconnected world is wonderful, but we need to be mindful of this when we consider how it closes the geographic gap between "us" and suicide #SBconference2024@lifevssuicide
