🏐 Celebrating the 2002 State Champion Mustangs 🏐

We honor the legendary 2002 Downers Grove South Girls Volleyball Team, whose dominance, teamwork, and relentless pursuit of excellence propelled them to an IHSA State Championship and a top-10 national ranking!

🔹 Powerhouse Offense & Elite Playmakers: Led by Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year Megan McDonald, alongside Jeanette Abbott and Claire McCormack, this team amassed over 800 kills. Setter Jaclyn Simpson orchestrated the attack with an incredible 900+ assists, while Beth Vrdsky anchored the defense with clutch plays and All-State recognition.

🔹 WOW Factor—Working on Winning: Embracing their WOW (Working on Winning) mindset, the Mustangs cruised through Regionals, Sectionals, and Super-Sectionals, dropping just one set en route to the State Championship. Their final 38-4 record cemented them as one of the best teams in program history.

🔹 A Legacy of Excellence: Under Coach Lazzeroni-Kavanaugh, making her eighth state appearance and third title run, and a dedicated coaching staff, this history-making team saw 10 players go on to compete at the Division I level, further showcasing their lasting impact on the sport.
