The Tupac Shakur murder trial is officially underway as jury selection begins.

Thirty years after the rap icon's killing and the lone living suspect in the case, Duane "Keefe D" Davis, is finally on trial. On Monday (Aug. 10), Davis appeared in Clark County District Court in Nevada for the first day of jury selection.

Judge Carli Kierny questioned a pool of 75 prospective jurors about potential conflicts, medical issues and language barriers that could prevent them from serving, according to the Associated Press. Family members and supporters of the slain rapper also gathered outside the courthouse as the proceedings got underway.

Keefe D, the former Crip gang leader charged with providing the weapon that was used to kill Tupac in September of 1996, wore a light blue dress shirt, blue tie and slacks. He reportedly sat quietly next to his attorney during the session.

Talking to reporters afterward, Tupac's cousin Kendrick Lesan said, "Whoever had anything to do with it, whoever set it up, whoever had any hand in it should be locked up in prison."

After being arrested in 2023, Keefe D has pleaded not guilty to murder with the use of a deadly weapon. Prosecutors have made their case partially off Keefe D's own admission to being involved in interviews and his memoir. His trial is expected to last a month. He faces life in prison if found guilty.
