Senior postdoc @CQU on Kaurna land. Researching ways to ⬆ health & safety of shiftworkers by optimising the timing of eating 🍴 and sleep 😴 Co-chair @asa_nest
Eating when we experience stress is a normal behaviour to meet increased energy needs. But sometimes our relationship with food becomes strained in the process. @cc_gupta@SKhalesi@CQU https://t.co/yFBN3kUFJZ
Are any academics still on Twitter? If not I’ll just tell Elon Musk about my award, hope he’s happy for me (I’ll take a Tesla). An honour to receive the 2024 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding ECR. Lots of rejections this year, so it’s nice to celebrate a win!
For now we can say: if eating at night, avoid large meals and opt for a small snack. A low GI, minimally processed snack MAY be less of a challenge to glucose metabolism at night and reduce the effect of the snack we saw in this study. Important next questions for research! (4/4)
🧵Our lab study on the impact of a meal vs snack vs no eating during nightshifts on glucose metabolism is out now in Diabetologia! (1/4) https://t.co/VwtcUvdfMC
A word of warning to nightshift workers: go easy on the midnight snacks and late meals. They may be putting you at higher risk of #diabetes, #heartdisease and #obesity, according to new research from @UniversitySA@UniofAdelaide and @sahmriAU https://t.co/GZCQ9qUMCm
So while no food at night may be best for glucose metabolism (and reducing long-term health burden of shiftwork), a snack could be best for performance and safety. This makes advice to workers challenging! (3/4)
‼️🪺 Attention NEST community! Our annual general meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday 29th) at 11am AEDT. This is your chance to help shape the council for next year and give us any feedback. We also have some roles available on the NEST committee. DM us for more info/zoom link!
Great fun presenting in the symposium on diet, sleep, and health - organised by @Yohannes_A_M_6. I could happily yap about our lab findings on diet and sleep for hours! (Luckily I didn’t) #SDU2024
I’m a savvy, modern researcher. I have dozens of windows and hundreds of tabs open at all times, each containing articles I’ll never read. I yearn for Chrome to crash and deliver me from a nightmare of my own creation.
Really great presentation from @PVarma_sleep on using an intersectional lens to understand sleep health disparities. Prerna I’ve written down many ideas and am publicly declaring my interest in collaborating on this! #SDU2024@asa_nest
A privilege to interview Aaron live in this symposium session as he generously shared his experience living with narcolepsy. Hope to see more lived experience incorporated in future conference programs #SDU2024
Happening today at @SleepOrgANZ's Sleep Down Under 2024. @lifecourseAust Research Fellow Dr Aaron Schokman will be presenting 'Lived experience of sleep disorders, and personal views and experiences living with narcolepsy'. Find out more - https://t.co/kOuYLqcJCJ

Awesome presentation from @SleepHygienePhD on the Healthy From the Start project where we co-designed resources for young shiftworkers. Made the project team, and her supervisors (@PhDsleepy, Prof Sal Ferguson & Dr Gabby Rigney) proud! #SDU2024
Another great @asa_nest NEST Fest! Thankyou so much to the incredible speakers who joined us - we got so much from your presentations! Great to see so many awesome students and ECRs in attendance #SDU2024
@SKhalesi@CQU@CorneelVDL@DWJohnsonNeph@JacquiWebster3 Great paper Sami! Would be super interesting to ask shiftworkers these questions about salt intake & availability of low-salt foods given there are huge challenges to food availability for some workers e.g. at night when everything is closed but fast food or convenience stores
