The Charlotte County Archives, housed in the Old Jail, collects, preserves, and makes available the documentary heritage of Charlotte County, NB, Canada.
In 1945, in her 70s, Mowat sold the business, though keeping up her own creative practices of art and writing. Cottage Craft has continued its focus on fine wool products to this day, while Mowat’s emphasis on the value of local, women-focused business resonates more than ever.
This #InternationalWomensDay, we highlight the story of Grace Helen Mowat, an early 20th C woman entrepreneur who wove her business from the landscape and female traditions of Charlotte County.
Mowat’s business emphasized the use of local wools, vegetable dyes, and homespun patterns to create high-quality woven goods for public sale. From humble beginnings, Cottage Craft quickly flourished, diversifying into tweeds, dolls, and even pottery.

Happy #blackcatappreciationday ! This little girl, in a family album from 1920s St. Andrews, certainly seems fond of her black kitty friend 😺 #vintagecats
The peaceful composition of this 1890s photo of canoers on Chamcook Lake disguises the effort photographer D. Will McKay would need to make it, managing large glass negatives, a bulky wood camera, and tripod on the rocky shore - at minimum! #photography
