But it won't be enough. 80 million people live with a neurodegenerative disease, with many more to come. Institutions and industry around the world need to join in similar studies if we are ever going to understand and treat what the ravages of time inflict on our brains.
What we have done so far has not worked, biology and neurodegeneration are too complex for us to pin our hopes on loose affiliations, we need precise therapies matched to specific targets to give us the best shot possible of stopping or slowing the degenerating human brain.
Like any exploration into the unknown, we don't quite know what we'll find or where this study will take us, but the goal is to discover specific abnormal biological signals in small groups of individuals that we can match to therapies.
CCBP in a nutshell: 5,000 people (2000 people with any form of Parkinsonism, 2000 with any form of dementia, 1000 healthy controls) followed and samples collected for at least the next 10 years, then stripped of their diagnostic label, allowing biology guide discovery.
