On the second day of the CCICED 2026 Roundtable, a delegation of international marine and environmental experts visited Xiamen to learn about the coastal city's achievements in its bay construction and wetland preservation.
They visited Wuyuan Bay Wetland Park, toured the public recreational spaces surrounding Black Swan Lake and traveled to Xiatanwei Mangrove Park to inspect its ecological restoration.
Experts, who gathered in the coastal city of Xiamen for the CCICED 2026 Roundtable, called for broader efforts to enhance global ocean governance through multilateral cooperation.
During the two-day event, participants shared the latest research findings and policy recommendations on the sustainable blue economy, biodiversity conservation, low-carbon transition and green international developments.
They also visited Wuyuan Bay and local mangrove ecological zones for a firsthand experience into Xiamen's progress and innovative practices in marine ecological restoration.
The governance of the lake informs the strategy adopted by the city. CCICED's second quarterly Chief Advisors-Secretariat joint working meeting of 2026 was held both in Beijing and online on April 30.
☑️Liu Shijin, CCICED chief advisors, noted that green transition at home and abroad is facing new developments and dynamics.
☑️Scott Vaughan, CCICED chief advisors, pointed out that the current global energy security crisis underscores the urgency of the green transition.
☑️Cui Dandan, Level Ⅱ Bureau Rank Official of the International Cooperation Department of Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China, noted that intensifying geopolitical conflicts have highlighted the importance of the green and low-carbon transition as an energy and security safeguard.
☑️Lana Edwards, CCICED Special Advisor and Director-General of the Department of Bilateral Affairs and Trade at Environment and Climate Change of Canada, commended the progress achieved in CCICED's policy research and expressed anticipation for the research teams to present their interim findings during the quarterly meeting. She also emphasized the importance of exploring opportunities for future collaboration and identifying forward-looking priority areas.

The 2026 CCICED Roundtable will take place on May 25-26 in Xiamen, East China’s Fujian province, under the theme “Harmony Between Humanity and the Ocean: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth”. The meeting will focus on key issues in ocean governance:
☑️Discussing how multilateral conventions on biodiversity, climate and ocean form a cohesive international framework, while identifying existing gaps
☑️Examining the coordination between high-quality marine economic development and marine ecosystem protection and pinpointing implementation gaps
☑️Sharing practical experiences in bay ecosystem governance, integrated coastal zone management, marine ecological restoration, and bay-area planning

CCICED’s SPS teams on Nature and Oceans held a joint workshop in Xiamen on April 2.
The team shared views and identified opportunities for long-term collaboration in research, policy, and events on issues of common interest, notably the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ agreement), which entered into force in January this year, and the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. #HighSeasTreaty #MarineEnvironment
CCICED’s SPS research team visited Yangquan, Shanxi Province from March 13 to 14, focusing on "Low-Carbon and Just Transition Pathways in Traditional Energy Regions of China".
The team toured the Yangquan High-tech Industrial Park, one of China’s first zero-carbon industrial parks, and held a seminar with the local officials. They also visited the Pingding Economic and Technological Development Zone, including a production plant for aluminum and new materials. #ZeroCarbon #EnergyTransition
The HLTF held a workshop on “Low Carbon Steel to 2035: Pathways and Policy Options” on March 25, bringing together Chinese and international experts to explore policies for decarbonizing the steel sector, including both domestic measures and international cooperation.
