Promoting thriving is what I do- as a psychologist, professor, researcher, Former Director of NOVA's Center for Women, Gender, & Social Equity and as a mom.
Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky coined the term “zone of proximal development” to describe the space just beyond a learner’s independent ability - but in which they can find success with the support of a more capable other.
What a lovely example we have here. This sweet little one struggles mightily to regulate her disappointment when asked to come inside from playtime, but - with strategies suggested by mom - manages to work through the moment without a meltdown. (And that breath!)

Have you ever met a precocious dinosaur expert - or, in this little guy’s case - a miniature John Deere tractor enthusiast?
Many young children develop intense interests, which can seem borderline obsessive. But research suggests that highly focused interests may actually enhance intellectual development - enhancing children’s perseverance, attention spans, and complex thinking skills.

My @NOVAcommcollege parenting student, laughingly said today, “this class is bringing up a lot of stuff I tried to forget!” I thanked him for sharing his journey with me, gave him the number of @timely_care, & told him his son was so lucky to have a dad like him. Brave indeed.

Journalism programs have to reinvent how we teach and prepare students if we are to help our field, and by extension our democracy, survive and thrive. Thanks for giving me some space @Poynter
“There is no greater challenge today than the threat to democracy. There should be no shame in standing up for the only profession besides religion that is enumerated in the First Amendment.” Tell it @ProfLorente! Teach us up!
“We have an obligation to build a journalism education model that keeps us grounded in core values while looking to a future we cannot predict,” @ProfLorente writes.
