Kang Seul-gi was born in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, studied in Ansan Byeolmang Middle School and attended the School of Performing Arts Seoul. She can speak both Korean and Japanese. She began training at SM Entertainment in 2007 and was one of the first 3 trainees introduced to the public on December 2, 2013, via SM Entertainment's pre-debut project, SM Rookies, alongside NCT members Jeno and Taeyong. She was soon noted for her dance performance of "Be Natural" by S.E.S. with Irene and her feature on Henry Lau's song "Butterfly" from his 2nd EP Fantastic in July 2014. On July 6, 2020, Seulgi and Irene debuted in Red Velvet's first sub-unit with the EP 'Monster' ft. Seulgi's solo song "Uncover". In January, 2021, Seulgi featured in the MV for labelmate Yunho's "Eeny Meeny". In February 2021, Seulgi and rapper Bewhy dropped the MV "Born Confident". On April 3, 2024, Seulgi released the OST "You're My Joy and Luck". On May 4, she was a special guest on BamBam's 'Area 52: The 1st World Tour Encore concert in Bangkok, Thailand. In December, 2019, she became the face of Coca-Cola's 2020 campaign "Little Big Moments" with actor Park Bo-gum and the Ambassador of French retailer L'Occitane's new campaign for their OMY "City Palette" shea butter hand cream. In January 2021, Seulgi became the ambassador of Volkswagen Korea, serving as the face of their new T-Roc model and helped promote it with original music and a video for their slogan "Born Confident". That same year Seulgi became a global ambassador for the Italian luxury brand Salvatore Ferragamo, the first K-pop act to hold that role, collaborating on campaigns like "Let's Dance."
