Got asked yesterday, in all seriousness, whether I miss vegetables.

Miss them. Like they've emigrated. Like there's an empty chair at the table and I sit there on Sundays looking at it.

Mate. I eat ribeye cooked in butter. You're asking if I pine for a boiled carrot.

That's the audacity. He's not asking whether I miss a food. He's asking whether I miss the ballast, the hedge trimmings, the stuff we grow to get animals through a winter, and he's asking with real sympathy in his voice, head slightly tilted, like a man visiting somebody in hospital.

Do you miss the sprout. Has anyone in the history of these islands ever missed a sprout.

Do you miss the courgette, a vegetable so committed to tasting of nothing that it has to be salted, drained, oiled, charred and hidden inside something else before a human will approach it.

Do you miss the bagged salad. Wet leaf, washed in chlorine, dead by Thursday, binned in silence on Friday. That's the real national relationship with fresh vegetables and everybody knows it.

Nobody's ever asked whether I miss margarine.
