Our paper is out!
๐งซ #Pseudopithomyces toxicarius was identified - causal agent of facial eczema in ๐ ๐
๐ Several other species & known #mycotoxin producers were also identified

All partners of the @mycobiomics came together @Fabiteam1 to reflect back on what we have achieved over the last 5 years ๐
Curious about what we were busy with? Take a look at https://t.co/bTEeSsZcxu
Three Fusarium species discovered in ๐ฟ๐ฆ Eastern Cape dairy pastures reveal potential implications for cattle health.
One species was named Fusarium mariecurieae to honour Marie Curie and recognise support from the @MSCActions project @mycobiomics.

Celebrating with the Applied Mycology group @Fabiteam1 - our first PhD publication! ๐ We described 3 new Fusarium species ๐งฌ๐ @MycoKeys https://t.co/YSzjxfvkGa

Also, how amazing is this gift ๐คฉ @CobusVisagie2@nerimanyilmaz82
8/n Special thanks to @MycoKeys@Pensoft & International Mycological Association for financial support. ๐ ๐ At @imc12 in Maastricht (Aug 2024), I was honored to receive the Young Mycologist Presentation Award, which covered the publication fees for this manuscript! ๐๐
7/n Our project also received funding from the EUโs Horizon 2020 research & innovation programme (RISE) via the @MSCActions grant (No. 101008129) under the @mycobiomics๐ช๐บ๐@REA_research@UPnasagric@UPTuks@Fabiteam1
6/n This research was made possible thanks to great support! ๐๐ฌWe received grants from:
โ @NRF_News (Grant No. 137791: PI:Myself)
โ FLAIR Fellowship (FLR\R1\201831: PI: @CobusVisagie2) by the #AfricanAcademyofSciences@royalsociety funded by the UK
5/n Our study highlights #Fusarium diversity in pastures in ๐ฟ๐ฆand we are now investigating secondary metabolites & #mycotoxin production in these new species. Stay tuned for more ๐งฌ๐ฌ๐งซ๐งช

4/n Additionally, we provided the first formal description of #Fusarium goeppertmayerae, since the original authors had not included one. Two more species remain undescribed due to poor morphological development in culture. ๐ค @mycokeys@Fabiteam1@mycobiomics
3/n We formally described them as:
๐ฌ Fusarium cumulatum (Equiseti clade) โ named for its abundant chlamydospore formation
๐ฟ Fusarium pascuum (Camptoceras clade) โ from Latin pascuum (pasture)
๐งชFusarium mariecurieae โ honoring Marie Curie & @MSCActions support @MycoKeys
2/n We surveyed fungal diversity in mixed pastures on Eastern Cape ๐ farms ๐ฟ๐ฆ & isolated 155 #Fusarium strains from the Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex. Using single & multigene phylogenies (TEF, CaM, RPB2), we identified 11 #Fusarium species, 3 of which are novel!
1/n ๐ฅWe named a newly discovered #fungal species, #Fusarium mariecurieae, in honor of #MarieCurie (1867โ1934) and in recognition of support from the @MSCActions grant @mycobiomics Naming a species is a taxonomistโs โค๏ธ language.

So happy when bookstores have beautiful books about #fungi ๐ and something beautiful to add to my bookshelf ๐ excited to learn more about the science and secrets of these beautiful little organisms ๐ค
Yayyy what a big day for Applied Mycology Group @Fabiteam1 We welcomed two interns, Annah and Steven, and two honours students, Unathi and Kerryn, to our group. Also celebrated the first student publication of the group written by Jenna-Lee Price๐โญ๏ธ#mycology
FARMER'S INSIDE TRACK: With agriculture always lurking somewhere in her thoughts, it's no wonder that research analyst Shivan Bezuidenhout eventually gave into the mesmerising appeal of a job she regards as meaningful.
