PARENTS: The most frequent question I get asked since I started the Hockey Think Tank is - โWhat team should my kid play for?โ
There are a lot of factors that go into it, but the two most important:
1. Who is the coach?
2. Will my kid get an opportunity to play?
The coach will be a huge influential person in their development as a player and a person. Whatโs their philosophy on player development? What do their practices look like? How do they focus on life skills?
For the second question - If your kid is going to sit on the bench all game, that is such a detriment to their confidence and love for the game. Thereโs nothing more frustrating as a kid than putting in a ton of work only to play a couple shifts per period.
Parents often feel their kid has to play for a super team or has to play at the highest level possible for them to develop best. Sometimes, thatโs not the case. Oftentimes, choosing a program that might not be the best (in terms of rankings/standings) but has great coaching and your kid is going to be a major player on the team is the best.
We had @Drew22Shore on our podcast who played on the NTDP and then had a great pro career and he had some great wisdom on this topic. Check out the episode today!!

GENO AURIEMMA ON ENTHUSIASM
"If your body language is bad, you'll never get into the game ... I'd rather lose than watch kids play the way some kids play.
They're always thinking about themselves. Me, me, me ... When I watch game film, I'm checking what's going on the bench."
