Some exciting professional news - I've left @BiobotAnalytics and will be joining Science for America in May! Very excited to take the skills I've grown at Biobot and apply them to find & implement game-changing solutions in equity in STEM & public health. 1/4
The MIT Department of Biological Engineering in Cambridge, MA, invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor level, to begin July 1, 2024, or on a mutually agreeable date thereafter. https://t.co/9eqSDXtRrx
1/ New paper! “Gender and retention patterns among U.S. faculty” w/ @laberge_nick@hneutr@_szhang@alliecmorgan M Galesic @baileyfosdick @danlarremore @aaronclauset: https://t.co/u0zYHs4Sh2
A systematic study of gendered rates & reasons for faculty attrition in US academia 🧵
Interesting work by @QinQinYu, @ScottWOlesen, @cduvallet and @yhgrad measuring access to sewers and showing which demographic groups are more likely to have lower sewer connectivity. This can help us promote equity in wastewater monitoring.

However, a 2017 study from the EPA showed that US households that earned less than the national median income were more likely to have a decentralized or no wastewater system. https://t.co/PCGGvVD3qk
A frequent limitation cited for #WBE is that households on septic won't be represented in the data. Given that rural areas are more likely to have septic & be more disadvantaged, then it follows that maybe #WBE is missing critical populations. But is the story really that simple?
Wastewater holds great promise as an emerging public health tool, but ~20% of households in the US are not connected to public sewers. Who is not connected to sewers, and what does this mean for equity?

@larsen_da Truly hero's work, I absolutely *loved* the paper when it came out and felt so validated about all of the data woes I'd previously experienced 😅😂😅
I also love this story of industry & academia cross-pollination. This started as "fun" Biobot hackathon projects & turned into the white paper. Bc we posted the paper publicly, it could spark further academic investigation & lead to cool collabs like this one - everybody wins! 🤓
Very hopeful that folks in #WBE will expand on this modeling approach to develop a more comprehensive understanding of who is and is not represented in WBE data, beyond simple analyses of demographics & sewer connectivities.
📢 NWSS is hiring!! We are looking for a mathematical modeler. Experience with epi infectious disease models or wastewater/hydraulic models is required. DM me for more information.
📢📢 We are developing a framework for evaluating wastewater surveillance. We are looking for a member of the public to join our team to ensure that the public interest is represented.
DM me if you or someone you know is interested. You don't need research experience.

@ScottTKelley@BiobotAnalytics Thanks Scott! And yeah, wastewater monitoring is pretty incredible - I know I'll still be using it to inform my Covid precautions for sure!
And if you want to hear more about what I'll be doing at Science for America, check out the blog post announcing their launch: https://t.co/j6esUDYKNs - and stay tuned for more! 4/4
I grew so much at Biobot & realized that (1) the early employee experience at a startup is v unique and (2) I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into. Follow along as I process and learn from this experience on my brand-new substack: https://t.co/ZAlgjTOxGU 3/4
