BREAKING: Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has invoked the notwithstanding clause to pass back-to-work legislation, requiring teachers to return to work.

Classes are set to resume on Wednesday. Teachers who ignore the order can be fined $500 per day, and the ATA or its locals can face fines of $500,000 per day for illegal job action.

Bill 2 is not tabled yet, but the news is out. They’re going to use the Notwithstanding Clause to override the Constitution and to strip teachers of their rights to association and collective bargaining. And they’re going to use huge fines to discourage defiance.
