Unless you do business privately that your clientele is solely based on referral and you use personal numbers for your business, then I would only call you out for that.
But if that's not the case, I think much as you think you are right, as a professional, you handled it wrongly from asking them "Who gave you my number" and then went ahead to insist on it like as if your whole engagement will depend on that so that you can build the rapport.
If you have previous cĺients, and in the business, you can build rapport on your previous works and along, this prospect client will also catchup and you will all be good to go to build personal rapport with this very client.
If you are into the business they reached out to you for, asking them how they got your number wasn't necessary. If you are in it for business.
It is important we understand that in building personal professional brands, we have to understand that there are clients of every kind. It's about how you as a professional you handle them will tell it all about the temple of the convo going forward.
Let me show you this ad. Much as it is just an ad, but it is how this cashier woman handled the guy that made her one of my stand out character in the ad.

There are clients of every kind. Entitled, cultured, ignorant, professional etc. But they all usually have one goal, to do business with you.
You will not be impressed by many clients in how they will come. But, it is in how you will handle them.
Yes, you can show them you are this and that, but in the end, remember, adults usually don't want to be taught unless politely.
If someone reached out calling you Z.
You would say, "I prefer to be called my full name Zuba not first name. Maybe Z is your popular tag name."
"So, how can I be of help, please?.
By the way you haven't introduced yourself to me yet it appears you know me and you've reached out. May I know who you are?"
Then they could go on to tell you who they are and why they are reaching.
Simple etiquettes. I think you were harsh.
If you've used WhatsApp business and a user is reaching out for the 1st time, there is that introductory message sent to them by default if you set it.
"Thank you for reaching out to [business name]. How can we be of help today?"
I think you would have handled it better. Maybe next time better.
I am sorry for where you will find me having gone wrong in my write up. 🙏
