Sony's plan to drop physical media has sparked global outrage across mainstream media and gaming events🚀
✅Physical games continue to sell millions worldwide (often 40% to 50%+ of total sales in UK, France, Australia and Japan for Resident Evil Requiem and others), proving they are far from niche.
✅Over 60% of countries lack a PlayStation Store, and the platform blocks region changes, locking international users out.
✅Digital libraries are vulnerable to sudden removals without compensation, permanent account bans, server outages, and region-locked codes.
✅Going all-digital kills the used games market, eliminates retail competition, and drives prices up.
✅Publishers manipulate data by bundling microtransactions and DLC into “digital sales” to fake a decline in physical demand.
✅With hardware projected to hit $1,000, multi-year gaps between exclusives, and PC offering better freedom, dropping discs gives players little reason to buy consoles.
Physical media must be preserved, because it means:
1️⃣Preservation
2️⃣Ownership
3️⃣Not tied accounts
4️⃣Second hand market and trading
5️⃣Competitive pricing
Not to mention books, vinyl, and Blu-rays continue to be produced, despite the existence of a far more cost effective and convenient digital alternative.
NO DISC 💿 NO BUY
Sony said you don't own your games… but we have all the receipts.
After Sony recently argued in court that “reasonable consumers” understand they don't actually own their digital games, fans have started compiling every example they can find where PlayStation used language suggesting otherwise.
The Consumer Rights Wiki has now documented dozens of examples of Sony using phrases like “games you own” and “you already own” across PlayStation's own websites and services.
That evidence is being collected as part of the wider backlash surrounding Sony's digital ownership policies and the ongoing lawsuit over how PlayStation presents digital game purchases.
Sony's legal argument hasn't been decided by a court yet, but gamers clearly aren't letting the company's older wording disappear.
Do you think Sony's old “you own” wording will come back to haunt them?
If you need more reasons to hate what PlayStation has become, here’s a quick overview of their sins 👇🏻👇🏻
🛑 Wasted almost an entire generation chasing Live Service games and burned BILLIONS in the process.
🛑 Forced studios into Live Service projects, only for most of them to get cancelled, fail, or die almost immediately.
🛑 Bought Bungie for $3.7 BILLION 😂 I still laugh every time I see that number.
🛑 Shut down Bluepoint Studio.
🛑 Horrible project management resulting in absurd $200–300M+ development budgets.
🛑 Constant price increases. Instead of taking responsibility for their own mismanagement, they pass the bill onto their customers. WE are expected to pay for THEIR failures.
🛑 Killed TLOU Online - ironically one of the few Live Service projects people were actually interested in.
🛑 Barely any major new IPs.
🛑 Almost zero meaningful communication with their fans.
🛑 The great PlayStation showcases are basically gone.
🛑 PS Plus keeps getting more expensive while the value proposition becomes harder and harder to justify.
🛑 Shut down Japan Studio, one of the studios that gave PlayStation so much of its identity and creativity.
🛑Killed Destiny 2
🛑 Concord. Hundreds of millions reportedly spent, only for the game to become one of the biggest disasters in PlayStation history.
🛑 Increasingly obsessed with gigantic AAA budgets instead of funding more smaller, creative and experimental games.
🛑 PS5 Pro pricing showed just how far they’re willing to push their most loyal customers.
🛑 More focus on monetizing the existing user base instead of simply giving that user base better value.
🛑 And now they’re killing physical discs from 2028.
This isn’t about ONE bad decision.
It’s years of arrogance, greed, mismanagement and slowly destroying the things that made people love PlayStation in the first place

sony ends disc production for every new playstation game in january 2028.
a new release becomes a download, or a box with a code in it.
the petition is approaching 350,000 verified names.
sony's public reply, twenty-six days in: nothing.
so the community stopped asking politely.
engagement is the number sony leads with every quarter, ahead of hardware.
the published figure only samples the last month of a quarter.
the internal dashboards read every single day.
a week-shaped hole in late august lands on someone's desk long before
november does.
a petition needs sony to choose to read it.
an empty server counts itself.

For the next ten years, Concord is going to be part of conversations it has zero reason to be a part of, because properly articulating your criticism for a game is way harder, and gets less views than posting memes, and knee jerk reactions.
Anthem is the first time I noticed the gaming space began to change for the WORST on YouTube.
It went from creators providing nuanced opinions to grifters dog piling on stuff with surface level talking points that their audience would parrot.
Next thing you know you got people calling you a corporate shill for saying you enjoyed the flying mechanics & the prime/detonate system, but the rest of the game was undercooked.
The crazy part is here we are on the eve of Anthem’s servers being shut down & I’ve seen several YouTube video essay’s titled something along the lines of
“Anthem wasn’t REALLY that bad?!” 🤦🏽♂️😭
After witnessing several clips my main takeaway from the Streamer Awards is many people learned the hard way there’s a difference between being internet funny & someone who is real life funny. It’s levels to this shit.
