When we lose someone we love we don’t know how we are going to react until it happens.
Grief can affect us in many ways, and sometimes we turn to comfort eating to help ease the pain.
This is a clip from Channel 4 @FirstDates where a young man explains the debilitating impact on his life after the death of his grandfather.
My family and I were devastated when we lost Mitzy last year. We are working to develop comprehensive bereavement services to address #petloss@goodgrieftrust which we know is vital.
Many who lose a pet, are not fully supported, so we hope to offer comfort to anyone affected.
Anyone remember where I parked my locally sourced organic Land Rover ?
The Tragic Comedy of Grouse Shooting Lies: presented to you by your elected representatives , at the @WildJustice_org driven grouse shooting debate earlier this week – enjoy .
We are working to ensure all health professionals working with the bereaved are supplied with our @goodgrieftrust Condolence & Signposting cards.
This essential resource should be mandatory to ensure those grieving know where to turn for support from day one.

Good morning,
Here is an update about our Good Grief Condolence and Signposting cards.
Since February we have supplied NHS Hospital Trusts, GP practices and community organisations across the UK with 20,000 cards.
We thank bereavement teams for investing 30p per family to signpost those grieving to a choice of immediate support from day one.
Approximately 650,000 people die a year in the UK.
Our vision is that every bereaved person should receive a card, to ensure we offer a consistent standardised pathway to early signposting across the country.

Wonderful news!
This week has been full of positive news for us at the charity.
This afternoon we are delighted to share the wonderful news that Councillor Julie Sloman has joined our charity as Ambassador and we are very proud to welcome Julie Elizabeth Sloman to our team.
Julie said;
'Until 1999 I spent pretty much the entirety of my career in End of Life Care, ensuring patients were able to comfortably navigate their final days, and supporting the family around the patient during that final special time and as they embarked on their grief journey.
Grief and bereavement was still a bit of an Elephant in the room at the time and access to bereavement support services seemed to be a bit hit and miss, a sort of post code lottery, quite often something generic that didn’t necessarily acknowledge the needs of the individual.
In 2022 following a 20 year interlude spent in Residential Social Work, I returned to work for the NHS as a Bereavement Officer at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. I was really pleased to see that in the intervening years things has improved somewhat with people talking more openly about grief and bereavement and there was an array of services available to support families.
I became aware of the Good Grief through my work at the hospital. It also brought into sharp focus just how many families were potentially falling through the net and not receiving support.
Blackpool is a holiday town attracting in excess of 21.5 million visitors a year, some who sadly pass away while they are here. Deaths in the town have to be registered in the town but signposting families and loved ones to local services would be futile, but by ensuring they had access to the Good Grief Trust we could ensure families would get that support wherever they lived.
My role also brings me into contact with our Coroner and Registration Services. In Blackpool we top the charts for a lot of the wrong reasons, one being the increased mortality rates in younger people, which in itself can make grief and bereavement all the more complex and leave individuals in greater need of specific and tailored support.
So, it is in my role as an elected Member of Blackpool Council that I have been able to have most impact. We Register around 3,000 deaths a year and I recognised the potential synergy of bridging both roles, getting the elected members and successive Mayors behind the concept of supporting the Trust.
We have embraced the Help and Hope Bench Plaque Initiative and purchased the Good Grief Cards so that every family who Registers a death in the town is provided with a card connecting them with the Trust, and access to immediate support.
I used an element of my ward budget to fund the initial purchase of 1200 cards, securing a commitment from the council to continue the supply. They are now with our Coroners, Our Registrars and at Carleton Crematorium.
I began my own journey in linking the Trust with the council by asking the other 41 elected members to purchase a plaque for a bench in each of their 21 wards. (2 councillors in every ward).
I explained that if only one person scanned on QR code on 1 bench we could make a huge difference to our residents. Ultimately we now have over a 100 benches across the town. If the other 20,000 + Councillors in the country did the same how good would that be!
I’m proud to say the council and our MP have wholly backed this initiative and Blackpool is proud to work in partnership with the trust, and I am proud and humbled beyond words to be asked to serve as an Ambassador'
Welcome Julie, we are thrilled to be working with you and know your passion to help the bereaved will be a huge asset to our charity.

Yes we agree, pets are hugely beneficial to the well being of those at end of life. 🧡🐶
They can bring peace and a sense of calm at the most challenging of moments in our lives.

A gentle reminder to School Professionals, Youth Group Teams and anyone else working with children and young people, to consider those who have been bereaved when planning any Mother’s Day activities.
If you work in a school it might be natural to add a Mother’s Day activity to your lessons or assemblies, but it will be a highly sensitive topic for bereaved children and young people. Be considerate, speak to them and their family and don't immediately exclude them from these activities. It might be that it's too much to engage this year, but equally they may want to join in and use it as a chance to recall happy memories.
#BereavementSupportForYoungPeople
Thankyou to our friend Julie New for this advice;
Coping with grief on Mother’s Day can be deeply challenging. Seeing families celebrating and all the displays of cards and gifts can remind us of the mothers, grandmothers or children we have lost.
Here are a few tips that might help you navigate the day:
🌼 Acknowledge Your Emotions
🌼 Create a Tribute
🌼 Plan the Day Intentionally
🌼 Seek Support
🌼 Be Kind to Yourself
Remember, being kind to yourself is so important, as Mother’s Day can also be a time of mixed emotions because you may have several different roles (mother, child, partner, etc.) and still be celebrating in some way. It’s possible to feel happy, guilty and terribly sad all at the same time.
Your situation is individual to you, and there is no right or wrong way to feel. But please know that whatever you’re feeling you’re not alone. 🧡🌻

This is excellent news @MiscarriageA
Leave For Every Loss – pre-24 week loss to be recognised as bereavement.
Today, the Government has committed to granting bereavement leave to anyone affected by pre-24 week pregnancy loss. This is an important step forward, and we look forward to hearing the detail of how this change in employment law will be implemented.
Our CEO, Vicki Robinson, said:
“We are extremely pleased to see, that for the first time ever, those experiencing pre-24-week pregnancy loss will be officially recognised in bereavement leave legislation.
“The Government’s commitment that pre-24 week pregnancy loss will be included in bereavement leave law, via the Employment Rights Bill, is an important milestone, and provides long-overdue validation that this type of loss can be experienced as a bereavement like any other.
“This achievement reflects the tireless efforts of the Miscarriage Association, Sarah Owen MP, our partner organisations, and individuals in calling for change through our Leave for Every Loss campaign.
“Whilst this is a very positive and welcome step forward, we are committed to engage with the Government as the Bill passes through the next stages to ensure it is enshrined in legislation and the details fully support our community.”
We hope you will join us in continuing to advocate for those going through the heartbreak of pregnancy loss.
