University of the Witwatersrand
in South Africa Dr Stanley Mpofu has been appointed to the board of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA),
the leading accountancy body in the country and one of the prominent institutes globally.
SAICA is the principal organisation responsible for training, accrediting and regulating chartered accountants in South Africa.
Mpofu’s new role comes after he was appointed as a member of the ICT Committee of Council at the Council on Higher Education last month.
He chairs Higher Education Information Technology South Africa and serves on several national ICT boards.
His primary focus would be executing his governance responsibilities in line with recognised best practices.
Mpofu told ITWeb:
“This appointment means a great deal to me because it reflects the trust and confidence the organisation has placed in me,” he says.
Serving on a board comes with a responsibility to uphold the highest standards of ethical leadership and governance, which are fundamental to organisational performance and delivering value to stakeholders.
My role will be to execute my governance responsibilities in accordance with the King IV and emerging King V principles of corporate governance, ensuring accountability, transparency and effective oversight.
This role will deepen my understanding of how organisations can be run effectively and sustainably, while allowing me to draw on my experience in both technology leadership and board governance.”
Mpofu added to ITWeb:
“I will continue to serve professionally and diligently in my role as CIO of Wits, while using this opportunity to give back to the country through the application of my governance skills and experience.”
Mpofu is a prominent ICT and digital transformation leader, with more than 30 years of experience in South Africa’s technology and higher education sectors.
Beginning his career as a desktop technician at Transnet in 1995, he rose to become CIO of Wits University in 2017, where he transformed the university’s ICT division into a strategic, high-performing unit.
A chartered CIO and certified director, Mpofu played a key role in advancing digital learning through initiatives such as smart classrooms and the rapid transition to online education during the pandemic.
He also champions digital inclusion, helping expand Eduroam connectivity across South Africa’s 26 public universities and institutions, including the City of Johannesburg and Airports Company South Africa.
His leadership has earned him numerous accolades, including “Visionary CIO of the Year” from the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa in 2020, “CIO of the Year” in 2024, and “CIO of the Decade in the Public Sector”.
#ElonMusk’s boldest investment may not be Tesla, SpaceX, or AI-it’s family. With 14 children, he argues declining birth rates threaten civilization. Yet he says wealth & leadership should be earned, not inherited. The ultimate legacy isn’t billions-it’s the mindset 2 create them.
Zimbabwean man loses High Court bid to overturn Home Affairs ban after court confirms permanent residence permit obtained for R12 000 was fraudulent and invalid
The Western Cape High Court has dismissed a Zimbabwean man’s application for an extension of the 180-day period to review Home Affairs’ decision declaring him a prohibited person over a fraudulent permanent residence permit. The case involved 40-year-old Fidel Isheanesu Mugunzva, who challenged the department’s findings and restrictions placed on him.
According to court records, Mugunzva first entered South Africa in 2011 on a visitor’s visa that expired in October and later November that year. In 2012 he obtained a permanent residence permit through an immigration agent named Wendy after paying R12 000, later using it for travel, employment, and banking.
In 2020 the Department of Home Affairs informed him that the permit did not exist and was fraudulent, declaring him a prohibited person. Mugunzva returned to Zimbabwe in 2022 and told the court he was too poor to pursue legal review, although judges questioned his financial claims and supporting documents.
Despite finding that Mugunzva may have had reasonable prospects of success and that Home Affairs did not properly allow representations or fully investigate whether he was a victim of fraud, the court ruled that his excessive delay in launching the review application outweighed those factors and dismissed the case accordingly.
