Today is the Feast Day of the 16 Carmelite nuns of Compiègne, who were martyred for the faith during the French Revolution. A standout episode of this event is when the youngest, Constance, who was 29, made her final profession of vows, and afterwards asked, “Permission to die, Mother?” according to the Carmelite custom of obedience. She was then executed as she sang Psalm 117 “His mercy endures forever!”
