My book, "Constructing the Achievement State", will be published next summer by Cambridge University Press (2026). The book is about the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and its role in creating a postrevolutionary state project after 1952. Link below 👇

On the heels of a longer piece in @CSSHJournal about the scattering of state documents in Cairo, I wrote a short reflection on how working outside official archives has enabled my forthcoming book on the Egyptian Ministry of Culture.
"I never intended on writing history," writes @celkhachab in our latest Behind the Scenes feature. Find out why his research on the Egyptian Ministry of Culture required going to the archives, and why those archives required an "ethnographer's flair."

@akankshaawal It's a representation of the Egyptian state's achievements fifteen years after the 1952 revolution, it's an anonymous side drawing in a statistical manual about the country's progress from 1967 (but a beautiful one!) The original drawing, I reckon, will be smaller than the cover.

THREAD: We have to stop calling Israel’s current military-security-terrorist campaign against Lebanon an escalation and start calling it a war. Not total war without ceilings yet, but war, nonetheless. Israel’s “shock and awe” offensive pursues short term tactical gains to make up for its strategic losses, while Hizbullah is aiming for longer term strategic objectives despite some tactical losses it has endured over the past week. 1/
Palestinian academic unions thank dozens of global universities that have taken steps to end ties with Israeli universities complicit in Israel’s war crimes, crimes against humanity and #GazaGenocide.
They urge all global universities to do the same.

Israel killed at least 492 yesterday, & before noon today they have killed an additional 182 in Lebanon. At least 500k have been forcibly displaced. This is a second genocidal campaign designed to protect the indefinite continuation of the first, with the full support of the US.
BREAKING - Lebanon death toll rises to 492!!! from Israeli strikes today
1,645 wounded
35 kids and 58 women
— Lebanese health ministry
That is nearing half the toll of 34-day 2006 war in a single day.
Israel's savagery has normalized in the Western media the killing hundreds of Arabs a day. But this is not normalized among the rest of us. This is not normalized. The wounds among the living in the region run deep. These wounds will come to life and tell their story in many ways. In this case, the moral arc of history will bend towards justice. Full stop.
BREAKING - 181 people killed, 727 wounded in Israeli strikes in Lebanon so far today
-- Lebanese health ministry
Deadliest day in memory in Lebanon-Israel conflict.
With a constant stream of US weapons & a political shield preventing accountability for its genocide in Gaza, Israel is now bombing Lebanon from south to north & issuing animated videos claiming nearly every civilian home in south Lebanon is a weapons depot or missile launch site
The Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs announced his ambition to conquer Lebanese territory, expanding Israel across the entire length of Lebanon's southern border. He calls to expel the entire "the Shia enemy population" from these areas & any possible "infiltration" routes.
