‘Lovely Young Man’ Sonny Tobin, 19, Laid to Rest as Ireland’s Road Death Toll Hits an Alarming 108

There were deeply moving scenes earlier this week as family and friends gathered for the funeral Mass of Sonny Tobin, a much-loved 19-year-old described as a “lovely young man,” who lost his life in a tragic road crash.

Sonny died when his car crashed just outside Thurles in County Tipperary. His death comes amid a worrying rise in road fatalities across Ireland.
Provisional figures from An Garda Síochána show that 108 people have been killed on Irish roads so far in 2026 (as of 31 July) , 13 more than the 95 recorded in the same period last year, an increase of around 14 per cent.

The upward trend is part of a broader pattern. Road deaths have risen in three of the last four years, with 2025 among the deadliest in more than a decade (around 188–190 fatalities). This contrasts with the EU average, where deaths have been falling.

Experts and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) point to several contributing factors: a growing population, more licensed drivers and higher overall kilometres travelled all increase exposure to risk.
Young people are disproportionately affected, almost a third of those killed in the first half of 2026 were under 25, while three-quarters of victims were male and around 40 per cent of fatalities occurred at weekends. Drivers and passengers still account for the majority of deaths, though vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter riders) remain a significant concern, with e-scooter-related serious incidents rising sharply in recent years.

Despite the Government’s Road Safety Strategy 2021–2030 aiming to halve deaths and serious injuries by the end of the decade, progress has stalled. Campaigners and safety groups have called for stronger action, including greater investment in Roads Policing, expanded safety camera networks, better enforcement of speed, drink- and drug-driving laws, and targeted education campaigns. The RSA and Gardaí continue to stress personal responsibility, slowing down, avoiding distraction, wearing seatbelts and never driving under the influence, alongside infrastructure improvements at known black spots and reforms to strengthen the RSA itself.

Throughout the week, tributes have flooded in for Sonny, with many people offering their condolences to his devastated mother on social media.
He is deeply missed by his devoted parents, Cinta and Eddie, his grandparents Tony and Ann (affectionately known as gang gang), Emmy and John, his beloved girlfriend Alyssa, as well as his wider family and large circle of friends.

A former teacher of Sonny’s wrote: “Sincere condolences to Cinta, Eddie, Sonny’s girlfriend, family and many friends on your tragic loss of Sonny. I was fortunate to teach Sonny in 5th class. I remember him as a kind, caring and happy young boy. He always had a smile on his face and radiated warmth to those around him. I hope you are all surrounded in love and support in the times ahead.

Sonny, may your gentle soul rest in peace.”Another tribute said: “My sincere condolences Eddie and Cinta and your families. A lovely young man whom I got to know through work the last couple of years. Always had a smile. May Sonny rest in peace".
Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

People ask why I don't eat much when I'm out.

In the part of the city where I live, coffee is between $7-9 depending if it's a week day or weekend.

The Devonshire tea - a simple pot of tea and scones - is $30.

Fish and chips - something that used to be a regular part of my childhood - $49.

The soup of the day, which comes with one slice of bread, is $35.

An egg and bacon wrap with nothing else is $29.

So yeah, I mostly eat salad wraps and Vegemite crumpets at home.

Coburg, Melbourne: Two men are accused of gang r*pe and imprisonment of a 14 year old child

Mohamed Hafda, 23, and Massimo Salerno, 22, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court pleading not guilty to charges that stem from an incident in September 2023 (charges were laid in January 2026). The matter has been committed to the Melbourne County Court.

Elderly 92 year old Mum asked me to find out what Labor’s Death Tax would cost the family if she passed.

Property is the family home located in Fitzroy, purchased 68 years prior and she’s still living in it.

Purchase price back then was 4,500 pounds, estimated current value $3 million.

Accountant said Labor would take appx $1 Million from the sale proceeds as a Death Tax.

I’m sure there are many Labor voters whose families are or will be in a similar position, so feel free to pass this around.

Let that sink in.

Labor voters should start investigating the impact & financial consequences of Labor’s Death Tax if one of their family members passed then start chatting to your local Labor Ministers & advise them if you intend to vote for them again.

BREAKING: Western Sydney hate preacher Wissam Haddad (aka Abu Ousayd) is on the run from hundreds of thousands in court costs after a Federal Court ruled his sermons “racist and anti Semitic”.

Haddad spent years at his Al Madina Dawah Centre in Bankstown spewing venom: Jews are “vile”, their “hands are everywhere”, “descendants of pigs and monkeys”, “troublemakers and schemers” who control money for “nefarious means”. He recited parables about killing them and called them rats and cowards.

Holocaust survivor Nina Bassat said she was shocked by the complete lack of humanity from a man supposed to be a teacher.

In mid 2025 a Federal Court judge ordered the videos taken down and ordered Haddad to pay the Executive Council of Australian Jewry’s legal costs - hundreds of thousands of dollars.

He hasn’t paid.

The ECAJ is now looking at enforcement.

Bankruptcy notice, assets seized, the works. The carpet layer turned preacher has gone to ground. No property, self employed, hard to serve.

His Bankstown centre sits vacant.

Alleged Bondi gunman Naveed Akram was a devout follower of Haddad’s teachings.

Akram was part of the street preaching circle around Haddad’s right hand man and associates.

The centre was shut after the link was exposed.

Haddad denies any knowledge of the attack and has never been charged with a terror or hate speech offence.

That doesn’t change the fact that a man who carried out mass murder in Bondi was soaking up his venom.
