For ARMYs coming to BTS’s Busan concert.
Are you guys okay regarding lodging?
I’ve been reading the reports of outrageous hotel price gouging and sudden reservation cancellations. As a Korean, I’m embarrassed. No one should have to deal with canceled rooms or absurd prices just to see BTS.
The situation apparently became serious enough that even BTS members voiced concern on Weverse. President Lee Jae-myung went a step further and reportedly expressed outrage during a cabinet meeting.
The government has since rushed to secure around 1,300 alternative rooms through university dorms, public facilities, youth centers, religious institutions, and lodging options in nearby cities like Yangsan and Changwon.
But let’s be honest. 1,300 rooms are nowhere near enough.
The concert alone is expected to bring around 130,000 attendees to Busan. Add in the people coming just to experience the atmosphere around the concert, and some estimates suggest roughly 200,000 visitors may arrive during that period.
And overseas ARMYs face an extra challenge. If you are unfamiliar with Korea’s domestic travel system, you will realistically have little choice but to rely on hotels and lodging businesses.
Without a more fundamental fix, I honestly do not see how Busan can continue hosting mega concerts like this in the future.
From what I’ve read, after President Lee’s order, the government is also going after the bad actors.
A joint task force involving tax authorities, police, tourism officials, and Busan city has begun inspections. They are targeting illegal lodging businesses, suspicious pricing, price collusion, sanitation issues, and the unilateral cancellations many fans have been worried about. Officials say businesses caught doing this may face immediate penalties, not just token warnings.
The government is also putting together an English-friendly reporting system for overseas visitors. If you run into cancellations or crazy prices, there should be an official phone hotlines (#1330 or #120) where you can report it.
One more practical measure. Extra late-night buses and trains are being added for fans staying outside Busan, so people are not forced into the limited and overpriced lodging market near the venue.
Some longer-term changes are also being discussed. One proposal would require hotels to publicly disclose room prices during major events and peak seasons.
To all of you coming to Busan, I hope you’ve managed to sort out your lodging and can now just look forward to the concert. Best of luck, everyone!
