Native to the tropics of the new world, the Cannonball tree was introduced to our subcontinent by the British. Named Couroupita guianensis by a french taxonomist, this tall tree soon became revered in Hinduism as an offering to Lord Shiva (hence the name Nagalingam) and in Buddhism. This species exhibits ‘Cauliflory’ where the raceme inflorescence grows on the trunk of the tree. The flowers are showy, fragrant after dark and inspite of having no nectar, attracts hosts of pollinators (I noted multiple species of Bees when I took these images).
It is a nice avenue tree, deciduous in nature and produces a woody, ball like large fruit. This particular tree I photographed in south Kolkata and I guess was planted by the Parks and Gardens wing of the West Bengal Forest Directorate.
