More than 6,000 years ago, the Sumerians created detailed maps of the solar system in clay, depicting the Sun as a central star and accurately illustrating the orbits and positions of the planets.
Some of their artworks feature giant, enigmatic entities in intriguing ways.
Over 6,000 years ago, the Sumerians, an ancient civilization in Mesopotamia, produced remarkably detailed clay maps of our solar system. These early astronomical diagrams demonstrate his understanding that Sun is a star at the center of solar system, with planets orbiting around it. Surviving Sumerian drawings reveal impressive accuracy in mapping the orbits and relative positions of the planets.
In addition to their scientific knowledge, some of these ancient works of art include enigmatic depictions of colossal entities, adding a layer of mystery to their sophisticated astronomical knowledge. This blend of advanced understanding and intriguing imagery highlights the complexity of Sumerian culture and its contributions to early science.

Standing tall and regal, Arpophyllum giganteum is an orchid that lives up to its name. This spectacular species, native to Guatemala and other parts of Mesoamerica, produces dense, cylindrical spikes packed with dozens of tiny pink to purple flowers. From a distance, these blooms create the illusion of a fuzzy, elongated wand, making it one of the most distinctive orchids in its habitat.
This orchid thrives in montane forests, often growing as an epiphyte on tree branches where it gets ample light and air circulation. Its striking floral display attracts pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds, which help ensure its reproduction.
Have you ever come across this stunning orchid in the wild?
