[EP.2] After watching the second episode, many people said they couldn’t understand the ending where Nanno takes the initiative to lift her skirt, revealing underwear with a name on it and letting the three voyeurs see. Some people think this didn’t punish the three boys at all. So what does this ending actually mean?

#GirlFromNowhereTheReset
First, it completely tears apart the hypocritical pleasure of voyeurism. The biggest thrill of voyeurism is not what is actually seen, but the feeling of secretly watching without being caught, controlling someone else’s privacy and satisfying one’s own dark desires. But in the end, Nanno openly shows it to them. When she lets them look directly, the entire thrill of voyeurism disappears instantly. As Nanno says at the end, “You’re being sneaky, filthy and wretched, isn’t it because you want to see? I’ll show it to you directly. Let’s see if you still enjoy it.”
Second, it is a complete reversal of power. The boys think that because they are secretly filming, they hold the upper hand. But Nanno shifts the situation from “you are secretly watching” to “I am showing it willingly.” She controls their gaze, their shame, and their reaction. She is not catering to them but humiliating them, exposing their cowardice and ugliness, their inability to be open, only daring to hide in the dark.
Third, it is the harshest satire on the culture of the gaze. In real life, girls who are secretly filmed often feel ashamed and afraid, while voyeurs feel smug and safe. Nanno completely reverses this logic. She is not ashamed, they are. She is not afraid, they are. She is not filthy, they are. Her final act of lifting her skirt is not frivolity but a sharp counterattack. Nanno is not seducing anyone and she is not compromising. Instead, she is telling every voyeur that their desires, their voyeurism, and their darkness are worthless in front of her, even laughable and disgusting. The things they tried to see secretly are shown openly, yet they are the ones who no longer dare to look because they themselves know how filthy they are.
In the end, Nanno’s action does not only punish the three boys in the story. It also punishes those in real life who are dark, sleazy, and afraid of the light while still believing they are in the right. And finally, when you watched the second episode, did you also find yourself hoping to see Nanno’s “KITTY”? If so, Nanno’s final act punishes the viewers in front of the screen just the same.
