On Auction Tomorrow (Sunday / May 31st) | WWII American Ace Pilot General John C. Meyer Attributed Distinguished Service Cross with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. Numbered 9889. - Lot 156219
Bid Now Live Online @ https://t.co/kANEr1rcMv

DSC awarded to Meyer for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy, 8 May 1944 when he led a flight of 8 fighters in an attack against greatly superior numbers of enemy fighters trying to intercept a friendly bomber formation. The enemy was successfully dispersed. During the engagement, Lieutenant Colonel Meyer became separated from his flight except for one wingman and lost considerable altitude. While regaining altitude he observed another flight of 15 or more enemy fighters flying towards the bombers. Accompanied only by his wingman, he unhesitatingly attacked the formation with utter disregard of the odds against him, destroyed 2 enemy fighters and broke up the formation. Before setting course for home, Meyer attacked and destroyed another enemy fighter. The courage and determination to destroy the enemy displayed by Meyer upon this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
General Orders No. 34, dated 10 April 1945, awards an Oak Leaf Cluster to the Distinguished Flying Cross. The orders state: For extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy while leading a squadron of P-51 aircraft, 1 January 1945. On this date, to save the airfield and ground personnel form extensive damage by a surprise enemy staffing attack, Colonel Meyer unhesitatingly led his squadron off the field in the face of an attacking force of approximately 50 hostile fighters and engaged the enemy as they initiated their first staffing run. Despite the enemy's tactical advantage in numbers and position, and although his own aircraft was burdened with loaded wing tanks and its maneuverability greatly reduced, Colonel Meyer viciously engaged the enemy formation, personally destroying 2 of their aircraft. His valiant action in the fact of extreme danger unquestionably saved the airfield from great damage. The extraordinary heroism and complete disregard for his personal safety displayed by Colonel Meyer on this occasion reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States. (Second Oak Leaf Cluster).
General John Charles Meyer was born in Brooklyn, New York April 3, 1919. He graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Geography before he enlisted in the USAAF in November 1939. After various flying assignments, Meyer commanded the 487th Fighter Squadron, 352nd Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force in the European Theater of Operations. By November 1944, Meyer was the leading American Ace in Europe with 37.5 destroyed aircraft, 200 combat missions, and 462 combat flying hours. He was awarded this Distinguished Service Cross with 2 oak leaf clusters for his May 8, 1944, September 11, 1944, and January 1, 1945 dates of action. He served an additional 31 combat sorties and destroyed 2 communist aircraft during the Korean War. Throughout the Cold War, Meyer served on the Joint Staff, Headquarters US Air Force Staff, and Strategic Air Command Staff. He was promoted to the rank of General on July 31, 1969.
The medal surfaced in the 1970s at the Greenbelt, Maryland militaria show sponsored by "Red" Bell, where it was sold to a collector. The collector was told (by the seller) that the medal had been found and purchased at a weekly flea market in Queens, New York. Upon further research it was learned that Lt. Col. John C. Meyer lived in Queens after returning home from the war.
General John Charles Meyer died of a heart attack on December 2, 1975 at the age of 56. He is buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
General Meyer was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1988.
Includes documentation & research file.
Note: The Art Beltrone Certificate of Provenance mistakenly notes the medal number as "6886" instead of "9889." This is a typo on Art's part when he was drafting the certificate.

2nd Lieutenant Lloyd J. Andrews, Pilot of P-38, No. 42-67189, was born in 1924 in Arizona. Andrews enlisted in the Army Air Force on September 14, 1942 and trained on an ATC-6 at Salinas Air Base. He met his wife, Anne Estelle, while training, and married on December 28, 1943. Andrews was discharged as a cadet on January 6, 1944, and officially commissioned as an officer on January 7, 1944. The couple filed their life insurance, and a loan from the Bank of Arizona, the same week. Andrews shipped out for Europe a few months later in May. Andrews earned the Distinguished Flying Cross following the destruction of more than a dozen fuel trucks, a tank, and a train at a German supply rail yard on August 12, 1944. After completing his 73rd Combat Mission on October 20, 1944, 12 miles south of Cologne, Germany, Andrews was shot down and killed. He was 20 years old at the time of his death. In a War Department letter to his wife, dated February 1945, the German Red Cross reported that he had been buried that same day after being shot down. Another War Department letter, dated August 1946, informed her that he had been reburied at the US Military Cemetery in Neuville-En-Condroz, Belgium, in Plot H, Row 10, Grave 239. He earned the Air Medal, Purple Heart, and Distinguished Flying Cross. The DFC was awarded posthumously, and presented to his 9-month-old daughter on December 27, 1945, one day short of what would have been the couple's two-year wedding anniversary.
