@oilersdayone the same goes for all art. people listen to music before buying the album, and preorder the album from artists they already like. the same goes for art, you see it before you buy it. like, nobody pays to start reading manga/webnovels, either
@oilersdayone like, I obviously think people who 🏴☠️ from indie authors when they can afford to buy their books, or worse, don’t actually support authors they claim to like, are being stupid and selfish. but most people don’t behave that way
@oilersdayone@jojo_escapist they don’t because I will buy books from authors I trust that I discovered maybe by not doing so. I will also buy books from new indie authors because I can afford it, since I don’t buy them from authors with more support. I also end up buying books I actually like.
@dumbdotcomm -we don’t really expect the person to pay to access it. the money is mostly made from an active fandom paying for physical copies after a certain point and choosing to support the artist through merch and stuff. no other artist asks the buyer to trust them off the bat
@dumbdotcomm the person who tweeted does not seem to have a patreon, so i don’t think that’s what they mean when they say that. people regularly pirate manga/read web novels completely for free, and this discourse doesn’t seem to exist over there. the point is that for any other form of art-
@lux_beatrice@jojo_escapist i have a few published novellas <3 and i wouldn’t discuss booktwt drama on my author account because that’d be insane and unprofessional. believe it or not some authors do support piracy either way <3
@lux_beatrice i don’t have a link promoting my work on my genshin account because i don’t want to promote my work on a genshin account? hello? also not all writers promote on social media
@oilersdayone@jojo_escapist no, they wouldn’t. they just wouldn’t read as much. i certainly don’t have the income to buy 120 books a years. I would just do something else instead
idc if an author is anti piracy but choosing to attack readers rather than the publishing industry/chain bookstores that have made reading an expensive hobby or governments that refuse to fund libraries & make them more accessible, these are the #1 contributing factors to piracy
my take on the 🏴☠️ discourse is that many authors are misinformed about publishing and don't realize how predatory it is. what they DO see is people reading their works for free, wherein they don't get paid a lot, because it's predatory. the reality is that publishing harms both
@bookreader1717 Also? After reading your book by piracy, if we rlly liked it we will save up for some time and gave up on some other things so we buy it!
But we need to only spend on what is super important for us because this system made leisure a luxury
authors need to understand that people are not choosing between buying your book or pirating it, they're choosing between reading or NOT reading your book. Hope this helps 🙏
@jojo_escapist like, as an author myself, it is insanity to think that you’re going to get a livable income off of casual buyers. at best you can be a one-hit-wonder. build a fandom of people who truly love your work and it won’t matter at all how they acquired it the first time around
@jojo_escapist it doesn’t hurt their income, it helps it. most people wouldn’t waste their money on a book from someone they’ve never read before. if someone trusts you as an author, they’ll buy your stuff, come to signings, and so on. this is how art is shared.
@jojo_escapist like, i know you guys don’t expect people to pay for albums from musicians they’ve never heard of before, or watch every movie on streaming or at the cinema. people do these things for free and then support the actors/writers/musicians greatly if they like them
@bryndensraven like nobody needs to pay to listen to music these days, and yet they choose to support artists because they love their work. if people truly like your work, they’ll pay to support you. literally no other artists expects people to pay to consume their work, why would writers?
@bryndensraven i’m an author and i would for real not care at all if people pirated my stuff. like who cares? the important thing is they’re reading it, and more people will be likely to support out of actual appreciation after anyway
